Chapter 10, Problem 10.2a

Some athletes will consume only protein for several days before a competition, which reduces the amount of glycogen in both the muscle fibers and the liver. What effect would this have on their ability to perform activities that require short, powerful bursts of activity? How would it affect their ability to perform endurance activities?

Everyone. Let's take a look at this question. Together, a high protein diet would have the following effect on the human body. Is it answer choice? A weight loss, answer choice B, weight gain, answer choice C enhances glycemic control. Answer choice D both answer choices A and C or answer choice E all of the above. Let's work this problem out together to try to figure out which of the following answer. Choices describes an effect on the human body as a result of a high protein diet. So in order to solve this question, we have to recall how consuming high amounts of protein relative to the normal amount that a person should consume would affect the body. And we know that the Institute of Medicine and the World Health Organization determine that the quantity of protein that is required to establish nitrogen balance is between 0.8 and 0.83 g of protein per body kilogram per day. Meaning that a person should consume anywhere between 0.8 and 0.83 g of protein per 1 kg of their weight per day. And studies have shown that consuming higher amounts. So any value above that 0.8 to 0.83 g of protein per body kilogram per day can result in sparing lean body mass during weight loss, as well as promoting weight management such as weight loss or weight gain. It can also lead to enhancing glycemic regulation as well as an increase in intestinal calcium absorption. So looking at the following answer, choices, which of the following is an effect of a high protein diet. And we know that weight loss, weight gain and enhancing glycemic control are all effects of a high protein diet. It, so answer choice E all of the above is the correct answer. Since answer choices A B and C are all effects of a high protein diet on the human body. So answer choice E is the most appropriate option. I hope you found this video to be helpful. Thank you and goodbye.

Textbook Question

Ms. Sanchez was in a motorcycle accident in which she lost the use of her right upper limb muscles due to significant nerve damage. However, when an electrode is inserted into her muscles, they are able to contract. Explain specifically why nerve damage caused her to lose the use of her muscles. Why can they still respond to stimulation from an electrode?
