Ch. 23 - Developmental Genetics

Chapter 22, Problem 1

In this chapter, we have focused on large-scale as well as the inter- and intracellular events that take place during embryogenesis and the formation of adult structures. In particular, we discussed how the adult body plan is laid down by a cascade of gene expression, and the role of cell–cell communication in development. Based on your knowledge of these topics, answer several fundamental questions:

How did we learn about the levels of gene regulation involved in vulval development in C. elegans?

Hi, everyone. Welcome back. Let's look at our next question. Which of the following cells synthesizes the Lin three signal protein. That's LIN- three during Volvo development and C elegance. Well, let's recall that C elegans is hermaphroditic very early in development, their mail and then the female reproductive organs develop a little later in development in the developmental process. So we're asked about which of the following cells synthesizes the length three signal protein. And our choices are anchor cells, Volvo precursor cells, uterine precursor cells or all of the above. So let's recall we can have more than one correct answer. So to think about this, let's recall the process of Volvo development. You have six Volvo precursor cells and they form An equivalent group. And that means all six of them have the same genetic potential, but end up having different fates. And that fate is controlled by this interaction with the Lin three signal protein. So it's all those evolve a precursor cells developing into the vulva. It is controlled by the Lin three signal protein and that is released by choice. A the anchor cell and anger cell releases this protein. It is nearby these precursor cells. And then depending on how close they are to the anchor, sell the closer the cell they receive higher levels of the limb three protein that causes them develop into um the central valve, all cells. Whereas the outermost Volvo precursor cells receive a lower concentration of line three single protein and become lateral valve, all cells. The outermost cells don't really receive any length three at all and they just become hypodermic. So this lin three single protein kind of determines the fate of these equivalent precursor cells. So we have our answer choice of anchor cells because we know it is not released by the Volvo precursor cells that they're receiving that signal. Um choice. The uterine precursor cells are not involved in this and of course choice d all the above is not correct since we have some other incorrect answers. So again, which the following cells synthesizes the lin three signal protein during Volvo development and see elegance. And that's choice. A anchor cells. See you in the next video.
