Silver nitrate solutions are often used to plate silver onto other metals. What is the maximum amount of silver (in grams) that can be plated out of 4.8 L of an AgNO3 solution containing 3.4% Ag by mass? Assume that the density of the solution is 1.01 g>mL.

Hey everyone. So today we're being told that the process of copper plating uses copper sulfate solution and we're being asked to find the maximum amount of copper in grams that can be plated out from a 3.2 liter copper sulfate solution that has 3.5% copper by mass. So the steps that we need to take in order to solve this problem, we need to take the leaders of our solution and we know the percent by mass. But to do this we need to first convert leaders into milliliters because we're given density which will also help us convert leaders to grams which we can then use to convert to grams of copper specifically terms of copper. So let's go ahead and start with this. So we have 3.2 liters of copper sulfate solution CUS 04. And to convert this into milliliters while we can remember that for every one millimeter we have that means we have 10 to the negative three liters. So with this our leaders of solution will cancel and we will be left with milliliters of copper sulfate solution. So from here we now need to convert our middle leaders into grams of solution and we can do this utilizing the density that is given. So we have 3200 ml of copper sulfate CUS 04. The density here Is 1. g for every one ml of solution. So our ml will cancel out and we will be left with 3,808 g of copper sulfate solution from here. Our final step will be converting the mass of the solution to massive copper specifically. Now remember we're given a 3.5% copper by mass In the solution. What this means is if we have 3,808 g of solution, our copper sulfate solution Then for every 100 g of solution that we have for every g 100 g of solution, 3.5 g of that will be copper because that is 3.5 x 100 or 3.5%. So our grams of solution will cancel out and we will be left with a final answer Of 133, 133.28 g of copper. Therefore the final or maximum amount of copper and grams that can be plated out from the 3.2 liter copper sulfate solution with a 3.5 copper 3.5%. Copper by mass is 133.28 g of copper.
