Ch. 24 - Cancer Genetics

Chapter 23, Problem 19

Cancer can be defined as an abnormal proliferation of cells that defy the normal regulatory controls observed by normal cells. Recently, histone deacetylation therapies have been attempted in the treatment of certain cancers [reviewed by Delcuve et al. (2009)]. Specifically, the FDA has approved histone deacetylation (HDAC) inhibitors for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Explain why histone acetylation might be associated with cancer and what the rationale is for the use of HDAC inhibitors in the treatment of certain forms of cancer.

Everyone. Let's take a look at this question together, identify the true statements regarding cancer. So let's recall what we've learned about cancer and try to figure out which of the following statements is true. So starting off with answer choice A. It says cancer causing genes are known as Anka genes. When we know that Anka genes are those genes that replicate uncontrollably and are dangerous because those are the genes that cause cancer. So answer choice A is a true statement. Answer choice B says expression of ANKA genes is suppressed by tumor suppressing genes. Which we know is also a true statement because those tumor suppressing genes are the normal genes which are used to shut down the cell division and direct cells to die. Such as those ankle genes preventing them from replicating uncontrollably and leading to cancer. So answer choice B is a true statement as well. Answer choice C says the cancer cells are also termed LS cells which we know that those Hela cells refers to that cell line used in research because hello refers to and re eta lax or LA, which Henrietta lacks was a 31 year old african american mother of five who passed away from cancer in 1951. And we use her cells for research purposes of cancer. So that is where the name Helen comes from in the hela cells, which means that answer choice C. Is also a true statement. And so the correct answer is answer choice D because all of the above statements are true since those cancer causing genes are known as Anka genes and the expression of the ankle jeans is suppressed by tumor suppressing genes. And the Hela cells are also referred to as cancer cells because of Miss Henrietta lacks whose cells we use for research purposes to study cancer. So answer choice D. Is the correct answer.
