All right. Hello everyone. So this question is asking us to determine the product or products of the reaction below. And here we have aqueous nn dimethyl ethyl amine reacting with aqueous HCL. We also have four different answer choices labeled a through D proposing different possible products for this reaction. Now, because one of our starting materials is an amine. Let's go ahead and differentiate between two different reactions that can take place with amines. On one hand, we have an acid base reaction more commonly seen between an amine and a strong acid, which is going to produce a mixture of ions. This is because of the transfer of a proton from the acid towards the base. On the other hand, we can also see a condensation reaction more commonly between an amine and a carboxylic acid. In that case, the expected products are going to be an amide as well as water as a by-product. This is because the hydroxy group of the carboxylic acid is replaced by the amino group of the starting amine. So with this in mind, in addition to our amen here, our other reagent is HCL, which is if you recall a known strong acid. So because of this, the reaction in question is in fact acid base. So we're going to transfer a proton from HCL towards the nitrogen of the amine. And so when it comes to drawing out the resulting products, recall that the amine is going to behave as a base, which means that it's going to accept the proton from the acid. So here I'm going to start by drawing the structure of the amine itself, but I'm going to add an additional hydrogen to the nitrogen of the amine here. And so because of the addition of this hydrogen to the nitrogen, nitrogen is going to have a positive charge creating an ammonium ion or a substituted ammonium ion. And the phase is still going to be aqueous because it's the same solution. Now, on the other hand, hcl behaving as the acid here has since lost a proton. So the loss of the proton is going to decrease the charge by one, meaning my other product is cl with a negative charge still aqueous and there you have it.
