About the book

Activate learning with real-world fitness and wellness topics

  • The most modern strength training presentation available includes photos and videos of over 80 strength-training and flexibility exercises featuring actual college students, modern gym equipment, and options for students with limited access to equipment. Exercises are organized by muscles worked so that students can make apples-to-apples comparisons and determine which version of an exercise is the most appropriate for their individual needs. Exercises are also accompanied by orientation diagrams, so that students have a clear idea of which muscles they are working.
  • Diversity boxes address topics relevant to diverse student populations, acknowledging that age, race, gender, disability, and individual life circumstances can result in specific fitness and wellness needs.
  • Encourage Behavior Change
  • A strong emphasis is placed on behavior change throughout the text:
    • Try It! sections within most feature boxes provide suggestions for immediate action;
    • Tools for Change boxes provide tools for longer-term change; and
    • Plan for Change labs ask students to write out an action plan for behavior change.
  • Apply It!/Try It! Timeline Tips offer coaching suggestions for behavior change. The timelines give students sample goals to integrate into their lives step-by-step.
  • NEW! Putting It All Together: Your Total Fitness Program builds on the fitness principles students learn in Chapters 1 through 5. It helps students to create an overall comprehensive fitness program that both incorporates the elements of fitness concepts discussed in the book and allows the implementation of change immediately.
  • UPDATED! Integrated Labs and Programs. Where relevant, when students assess themselves in an end-of-chapter lab or a chapter exercise, the authors guide them to their appropriate starting level in the Activate, Motivate, and Advance Programs on yoga, running, flexibility, and meditation. This gives students the ability to do the lab activity in class and then enhance their own lifelong wellness by implementing the program on a daily basis at the appropriate starting level. Students can select their program, track their progress, and access related tips on their mobile phone.
  • Unique Case Studies presented in each chapter introduce a character who reflects the concerns, questions, and thought processes that students are likely to have themselves. Apply It! and Try It! sections at the end of the case studies encourage critical thinking and help students take action to apply healthy behavior changes to their own lives.
  • More than 80 videos of strength-training and flexibility exercises are available. Students can access additional instruction on their own time and have the ability to exercise from the comfort of their home.
  • Labs employ a unique three-pronged approach. The book includes three types of labs: 1) skill-acquisition labs, 2) self-assessment labs, and 3) action-plan labs. The labs not only measure a student's current level of fitness and wellness, but also teach practical lifelong skills and encourage real behavior change. All labs are also assignable online in an interactive PDF format.
  • QR codes placed near pertinent content make fitness mobile. Students can scan the QR code with a reader on a smartphone or a tablet, and the device loads up the exercise video, bringing the content to life.

Keep students motivated

  • NEW! Study Plan tied to Learning Outcomes. Numbered learning outcomes now introduce every chapter and are tied directly to chapter sections, giving students a roadmap for their reading. Also an UPDATED! and NEW! GetFitGraphic infographic in every chapter presents a thought-provoking topic in a visually stunning presentation. GetFitGraphics help students understand information effectively and provide a jumping off point for instructors to stimulate classroom discussions. For the 4th Edition, selected infographics have been streamlined and updated with the latest information and data. New GetFitGraphics are also included in Chapters 1 and 2.
  • Reflection Questions appear at the end of the labs, asking students to reflect on the choices they made or their results from the assessments.
  • Q&A boxes investigate common questions and concerns students may have in relation to chapter topics.
  • A pre- and post-course progress worksheet included at the beginning of the book and online allows students to assess their progress on key fitness and wellness assessments.
  • UPDATED! The vibrant design and visual presentation of content has been fine tuned. This includes making headings more visible, integrating learning outcomes into the material, and pulling out references—all to enhance navigation and visual appeal.
