Chapter 21, Problem 13

Through the Human Genome Project (HGP), a relatively accurate human genome sequence was published from combined samples from multiple individuals. It serves as a reference for a haploid genome. How do results from personal genome projects (PGP) differ from those of the HGP?

Hey, everyone, let's take a look at this question together, which of the following describes a disadvantage of personal genome projects in comparison to the human genome project. So let's recall what we've learned about what the human genome project is. And compared to the personal genome project to figure out which of the following describes disadvantage. So we know that the personal genome project differs from the human genome project in that the personal genome project relies on stealth reported medical histories and you know, typical data. And the issue with this is that it can be inaccurate or untrustworthy because it is the person who is reporting it themselves. And so that data may not be accurate or trustworthy. And so looking at the following options, we can see that answer choice A which says that the personal genome project is dependent on self reported medical histories and phenotype IQ data, both of which may not be reliable, which is a true disadvantage of the personal genome project when compared to the human genome project. So answer choice A is the correct answer. And we know that it's not answer choices B C or D because answer choice B says the personal genome project is unable to detect rare genetic mutations, which we note that it is able to detect those rare genetic mutations. Answer choice C says that it can only sequence specific regions of interest within a genome, which we note that it can sequence the entire genome. And so answer choice C is incorrect. And lastly answer Christie says personal genome project is unable to examine epigenetic factors, which we know that it is able to do that as well. So answer choice A is the only one here that describes a disadvantage of the personal genome project when compared to the human genome project. So it is the correct answer. I hope you found this video to be helpful. Thank you and goodbye.
