Hello in this problem we are asked what are the cathodes, anodes and overall cell reactions for the electrolysis In a cell with inert electrodes of the aqueous solution of nickel to magnate salt. So let's consider the possible reactions that could take place at the cathode. Recall. That reduction then occurs at the cathode. So it is occurring in an aqueous solution. So the water could be then reduced to form hydrogen gas. And the drugs that aren't standard reduction potential is equal to negative 0.83V and then our nickel ions to be reduced form nickel metal. Standard reduction potential is equal to negative 0.26V. So when we compare these two standard reduction potentials, the one that is the less negative means that this reaction has a greater potential for being reduced. So that means nickel then will be the reaction that occurs at the cathode. Looking at those possible reactions that occur at the anodes recall. This is where oxidation takes place. So we could again have water now being oxidized form oxygen gas and I do nylons. The standard oxidation potential is equal to negative 1.23V. And we could have our manga Nate being oxidized form permanganate. This has a standard oxidation and potential of -0.56V. When comparing these two standard oxidation potentials, the one that is less negative will have a greater potential to be oxidized. So that means then the magnate being oxidized to permanganate will be the reaction that occurs at the anodes. We then want to find our overall reaction. So the number of electrons that are being gained has to equal the number of electrons that are being lost. So we're gaining two. So we need to lose too. So we'll take our reaction that is taking place at the anodes and multiply it by two. We then will combine everything. Our two moles of electrons will cancel. So on. Are reacting side. Then we have nickel ions Reacting with two moles of mangan eight, and we go to form nickel metal Plus two moles of permanganate. And this is our overall cell reaction. And this corresponds then to answer a thanks for watching. Hope this helps.
