Chapter 10, Problem 1

The recommended pressure for inflation of an automobile tire is 35 psi. What is the pressure in units of mm Hg? 11 atm = 14.7 psi; 1 atm = 760 mm Hg2 (LO 10.1) (a) 3.9 * 105 mm Hg (b) 0.68 mm Hg (c) 3.2 * 102 mm Hg (d) 1.8 * 103 mm Hg

Welcome back everyone. We're told that 25 P. S. I. Is the recommended tire pressure for mountain bikes convert this pressure. Two millimeters of mercury. Were given that one. A. T. M. Is equivalent to 760 millimeters of mercury and 1 80 M. Is also equal to 14.6 96 P. S. I. S. So we should recognize that these are all units of pressure A. T. M's millimeters of mercury and P. S. I. S. And so we're going to begin by converting from the given pressure in the prompt, 25 P. S. I. S. And first we're going to go to a. T. M's. So we're gonna multiply by the given conversion factor in the prompt where we're told that 14.6 96 P. S. I. S. Are equivalent to 1 80 M. So now we can cancel out P. S. I. S. In the numerator and denominator. And for our final answer, we want to multiply by our second conversion factor to get two millimeters of mercury as our final unit in the numerator. And so we would have a T. M's in the denominator and we can plug in that second conversion factor given in the prompt where 80 M. Is equivalent to 760 millimeters of mercury. Now canceling our units of a T. M's were left with millimeters of mercury in the numerator and plugging everything carefully into our calculator. We're going to get a final answer equal to 1292.87 millimeters of mercury and checking our prompt for sig fix rps, I for the tire pressure of the mountain bikes has 266. So we want our final answer to be rounded to about 266. And so we would say our final answer is going to be 1.3 times 10 to the third power millimeters of mercury. So this would be our final answer for our pressure of the mountain bikes in millimeters of mercury or the pressure of the tires of the mountain bikes in millimeters of mercury.
