A patient-centered approach to pharmacology in nursing practice

Pharmacology: Connections to Nursing Practice links pharmacology to patient-centered nursing care. The content is organized by body system and disease to contextualize drugs by therapeutic application. The use of prototype drugs helps students learn a vast range of medications. Features such as patient scenarios and practice applications shed light on lifespan considerations, alternative therapies, and gender and cultural influences.

The 4th Edition includes more than 30 new FDA-approved drugs. It also has more than 20 new visuals and a new feature developing the clinical decision-making skills of advanced practice nurses.

Hallmark features of this title

Connections to nursing practice

  • Making the Patient Connection feature opens each chapter with a quote and a photo of a patient. The patient is revisited at the end with critical-thinking exercises.
  • Connections: Treating the Diverse Patient feature identifies gender, cultural and ethical factors that influence drug action.
  • Connections: Nursing Practice Applications connect the nursing process to the major drug class(es) in each drug chapter and incorporate outcomes from QSEN competencies.

Learning aids

  • A prototype approach introduces 194 representative medications from each classification.
  • Vivid, colorful illustrations depict the A&P and pathophysiology of each body system.
  • Chapter reviews with NCLEX®-style questions prepare students for exams.

New and updated features of this title

A practical approach to learning pharmacology

  • EXPANDED: More than 30 new drugs approved by the FDA since the last edition have been added.
  • UDPATED: The latest FDA-issued black box warnings are identified for all prototype medications.
  • UPDATED: Easy-to-understand drug tables reflect the latest FDA-approved drugs and average dosages. The most common and serious adverse effects for each drug or drug class are listed.

Engaging case studies and visuals

  • NEW: Connections: Preparing for Advanced Practice uses case studies to develop the clinical decision-making skills of advanced nurses, especially those preparing to work in specialty settings or with vulnerable populations.
  • EXPANDED: Pharmacotherapy illustrated features present the mechanism of action for many of the prototype drugs. This shows students how drugs counteract the effects of disease.
  • NEW: More than 20 figures have been added or revised to clarify difficult pharmacologic concepts.
