Reveal the dynamic process of development from early adulthood to end of life

The Journey of Adulthood explains the development of adults as they leave adolescence and move through their adult years until the end of life. Referencing both large longitudinal studies and smaller studies of diverse groups, the text helps students see the influences of gender, culture, ethnicity, race and socioeconomic background upon aging.

Joining author Barbara Bjorklund for the 9th Edition, new co-author Julie Earles brings a fresh perspective. Fully updated content and research citations reflect the rapidly changing field of adult development.

Hallmark features of this title

  • A systemic approach explores development from early adulthood to end of life.
    • Chapter 1 offers the basics: definitions, methods and guiding perspectives for the study of adult development.
    • Chapters 2 through 8 cover traditional developmental topics. These chapters offer recent research, classic studies, current theories, new directions and practical applications.
    • Chapters 9 through 11 cover topics not traditionally found in adult development texts: the quest for meaning; the inevitability of stress, coping and resilience in adult life; and the way we face our own deaths and those of our loved ones.
    • The closing Chapter 12 takes a chronological look at adult development to pull all the previous content together.

New and updated features of this title

  • UPDATED: The 9th Edition of The Journey of Adulthood features a comprehensive update of all chapters. Almost one-third of the references are new to this edition, as are many of the figures and tables. The field of adult development is changing quickly, and the 9th Edition offers coverage of the major developments that have taken place since the previous edition was published. Highlights include:
    • new research on age-related changes in olfactory abilities
    • new diagnosis techniques for Alzheimer's disease
    • new research on the positive effects of physical exercise and cognitive engagement on cognitive abilities
    • a more detailed look at young and middle-aged adults who spend time as caregivers for older adults
    • new APA guidelines on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Features of Revel for the 9th Edition

  • Two simulations in one, MyVirtualLife offers profound insights into development across the entire lifespan. After students parent a virtual child (by way of the included MyVirtualChild learning path), MyVirtualLife pivots to the first-person perspective of a virtual adult, providing a vivid sense of the impact of genetics, attitudes and decisions over the course of a lifetime.
  • Writing assignments, such as journaling prompts, shared writing activities and essays, enable educators to foster and assess critical thinking without significantly impacting their grading burden.
