An integrative model of couples counseling

Counseling and Therapy for Couples presents a variety of techniques from different theories. The text provides clear guidance about using techniques that match the goals of the couple. The authors introduce their Integrative Model of Couples Counseling early in the book. They provide examples of its use in every chapter. This step-by-step way of understanding how therapy develops gives the learner a structure to build upon.

The 1st Edition includes case studies that highlight the problems that real couples face. Discussion Questions address ethical and controversial issues that students can reflect upon.

Hallmark features of this title

  • Cultural considerations are addressed in Chapter 2 with a focus on racial, ethnic, religious and spiritual diversity.
  • A chapter on LGBTQ+ couples focuses on unique stressors for couples who are sexual and gender minorities. Beginning with history and terminology, Chapter 7 describes the importance of education and familiarity with understanding terms commonly used when working with LGBTQ+ couples.
  • A chapter on violence and trauma in couple relationships describes ongoing trauma, such as violence, as well as trauma from childhood.
  • Other key issues faced by couples are covered in separate chapters on sex and intimacy (Chapter 9), infidelity (Chapter 10) and addictions (Chapter 12).

New and updated features of this title

  • The Integrative Model of Couples Counseling is introduced in Chapter 3 and defines the interactive definition of the problem as both partners having “buy-in” or commitment to therapy. Chapter 4 takes the reader through the remaining stages of the model: goal setting, interventions, maintenance and validation.
  • A variety of techniques, assessment methods and theories give students a broad perspective of the field.
  • Coverage of foundational practices and techniques in Chapter 6 presents 10 general treatment approaches and twelve discrete interventions aimed at moving the couple toward their goals.
  • A focus on psychoeducational methods reflects the authors' extensive experience (since 2003) working with couples in relationship education.
  • Case Studies and examples illustrate how to use the integrative model to address problems that real couples face.
  • Discussion Questions in each chapter present ethical and controversial issues that readers can use for self-reflection and personal growth. Learning Objectives identify key outcomes for the chapter. End-of-chapter Conclusions bring together the crucial issues.
