So for BND, I know that more than few of you guys thought, okay, well, since bromine is always going to add to the tertiary location, why don't I just use chlorination and then it will add to the other location. Like if I use chlorination, then it will add there. Wrong. You're right. Maybe I would get a tiny amount of that, but what we're looking for is in high yield. We're looking for to get from that original alkane, like, to 100 percent of this or close to that. There's no way that a chlorination could do that. So this is not going to be one step. There's going to be multiple steps. So let's try first. I think is the easier one. So for we might as well just already put a halogen here because we know that that's always going to be the first step. You need to add a halogen in the most stable position. So the reagent for that would be 1br2 over let's say heat. So that's the first one. So it's going to give me a bromine there. Now what I want to do is I want to transform. I want to move that bromine from the top to the bottom. How do I do that? Well, what I need to do is remember that I said whenever you're moving functional groups, what are you doing? Okay. Well, whenever you're moving functional groups, you have to be moving from in either in order of most substituted or least substituted. Okay? You have to be thinking of that. Okay? So would this be going in a more substituted direction or in a less substituted direction? What do you guys think? Well, the first step is that I want to make a double bond that's going to extend from this carbon to that carbon. So what I'd have think is, is that going to be a Zaitsev double bond or is that going to be a Hoffman double bond? And it turns out that that would actually be Zaitsev because that's going to be the double bond that's most substituted. So in my So in my second step, I want to do some kind of elimination that is Zaitsev. We could really pick any strong base we want as long as it's not bulky. So I could use, for example, we could just use ethoxide. So e t o n a. Okay. It would be a great choice here. Okay. So now what that's going to do is instead of giving me a bromine there, it's going to give me a double bond there. Now if I want to add a bromine to this location, what reagent could I use to do that? Well, I have to ask is that the Markovnikov? There's addition now. So for addition, is this the Markovnikov addition or the anti Markovnikov addition? This would be the anti Markovnikov addition. So what that means is that 3 has to be HBr over peroxides. That's it. That would give me a bromine here. Cool, right? So see how we're using the moving functional group thing a lot? Okay. So let's try d. So for d, I had a similar problem. You're always going to start off with the bromine here. So let's go ahead and just put that first reagent there. It would be Br over heat. So now in my second step, I have an alkyl halide and if I want to move functionality, I'm going to need to use alternating addition elimination. So since I'm starting off with an alkyl halide, should I use addition next or elimination next? Which one? Well, according to the rules I gave you, you should use elimination next. So what that means is that I want to eliminate in this direction so that I can actually extend my functional group all the way over here. Is that going to be the Zaitsev or the Hoffman double bond? That would be the Hoffman because it's going to leak the less substituted double bond, so this I would just have to use any bulky base. In this case, I'll just use LDA. You could have also used Terbutoxide. That would have been great. Okay. Cool. So now what I've got is this old one that looks like that. Now all I have to do is I have to add a bromine right here. What reagent could I use to add a bromine in that position? Well, in order to figure that out, I need to think is this the Markovnikov addition or the anti Markovnikov addition? This would be anti Markovnikov because once again, I'm attaching to the less substituted, so it turns out that this reagent is exactly the same as the last reagent over there. In fact, almost everything was the same with the synthesis except we just did one step in the middle that was different, which was LDA and it made a totally different product. Interesting, right? Cool. So now let's look at either let's look at and What I want you guys to tell me is how could I we just learned how to make those alkyl halides from alkane. Can you guys think of any synthetic pathway that could turn an alkyl halide back to an alkene where it came from? For this, I'm once again gonna going to end the video. I want you just to brainstorm what could possibly turn these back into alkanes. It's not a one step process, but it's pretty fast. So go for it.
