Chapter 1, Problem 33c

The following statements pertain to the development of the theory of the structure of DNA. Match the statement with the appropriate step (observation, hypothesis, experiment designed to test hypothesis) in the scientific method. (c) Direct X rays at a sample of crystallized DNA, and inter-pret the diffraction pattern for structural information.

Hi everyone. This problem reads. The following statements are about an experiment involving ionic hydrates, classify the following statements as an observation hypothesis or experimental method. So let's take a look statement. One reads. The mass of the sample is 40.67 g. So here we have a measurement. The measurement is, the mass of the sample is 40.67g. When we have a measurement, this is an observation. Okay, statement to the sample lost mass because the water molecules were evaluated. So this statement is attempting to explain a phenomenon. The phenomenon is that the water molecules were evaporated and this is why the sample lost mass. So this makes statement to a hypothesis. In statement three. The sample was placed in a test tube and then heated over a flame. This is a procedure. Okay? So because it's a procedure that makes this an experimental method so now that we know what each is classified as. Let's identify the correct statement. Okay. And looking at the statements, we see that answer choice B correctly labels each statement one is an observation. Statement two is a hypothesis and statement three is an experimental method. That's it for this problem. I hope this was helpful

What is the difference between a hypothesis and theory? (a) A hypothesis provides an explanation for a phenomenon, but a theory does not. (b) A theory provides an explanation for a phenomenon, but a hypothesis does not.
