Chapter 16, Problem 9a

Phenylephrine, an organic substance with molecular formula C9H13NO2, is used as a nasal decongenstant in over-thecounter medications. The molecular structure of phenylephrine is shown below using the usual shortcut organic structure. (a) Would you expect a solution of phenylephrine to be acidic, neutral, or basic?

Hello everyone today. We are being asked the following question. Histamine, an organic molecule with the formula C five H nine and three is a neurotransmitter in the body. The structure of histamine is shown below is a solution of histamine, acidic neutral or basic. So when we see here, what we see here is a structure of histamine and we see we have three nitrogen. Now we can also note that this nitrogen here has one lone pair. This nitrogen here has one lone pair And this nitrogen has one lone pair. And so when we have nitrogen with lone pairs, this is going to be representative of a basic solution. So therefore a solution of histamine is going to be basic. I hope this helped and until next time.
