Keynote - Leah Lommel
Chief Operating Officer

Leah Lommel is Chief Operating Officer of EdPlus at Arizona State University. Her areas of responsibility include strategy, conception, and operationalization of online programs, services and new ventures. Drawing on over 20 years experience with higher education processes and systems, Leah ensures ASU’s online programs are rigorous, scalable, and ultimately promote student retention and graduation. She earned her BAILS in Business Administration and her Masters of Administration in Leadership from Northern Arizona University.

Keynote - Mitch Lowe
CEO MoviePass, Co-Founder of Netflix, Former President of Redbox
Mr. J. Mitchell Lowe, also known as Mitch, has been the Chief Executive Officer of MoviePass, Inc. since June 28, 2016. Mr. Lowe is a Partner at Crestlight Venture Partners, LLC. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of Quarterly, Inc. since June 18, 2013. Since late 2011, he has been an Independent Consultant for entrepreneurs and startups. He has more than 25 years in the video and rental industry, including executive positions at two of the most groundbreaking and influential companies in the home entertainment business since the 1980’s.
Mr. Lowe’s career in the video business started in the 1980’s with Video Droid. He opened a successful chain of video rental stores, further increasing his knowledge about the video rental customer experience. Leveraging that experience, he created a business that built websites for video rental stores. Mr. Lowe served as the President of Redbox Automated Retail, LLC of Outerwall Inc. from April 2009 to October 2011 and served as its Chief Operating Officer since May 2005. He helped to build a strong management team at Redbox and was instrumental in developing the concept of $1 per night new release DVD rentals. Mr. Lowe also consulted for McDonald’s business development group, focusing on automated vending machines.
Mr. Lowe was a Founding Executive of Netflix, Inc. since 1998, and also served as its Entertainment Domain Expert and Vice President of Business Development & Strategic Alliances from 1998 to 2003. He has been head of The Content Advisory Board of NanoTech Entertainment, Inc. since February 2014. He serves as a Director of Cantaloupe Systems, Inc. He is a Board Advisor to Alchemy Entertainment, Fandor, Moviepass, Spray, GoWatchit, and SkywriterRX. He has been a Director of Our Alchemy, LLC since August 2015. He has been an Independent Director at Notis Global, Inc. (formerly Medbox, Inc.) since March 3, 2014. He has been a member of The Content Advisory Board of NanoTech Entertainment, Inc. since February 2014. Mr. Lowe was Chairman of the Video Software Dealers Association since 1996 and was its Director from 1991 to 1996.

Dan Viele
Dean, School of Adult and Online Education
Maryville University
Dan Viele, Professor of Accounting, currently serves Maryville University in St. Louis as Dean of the School of Adult & Online Education. Previously, he served at Webster University as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Director of its Online Learning Center, Chair of the Business Department, and Director of Online Programs for the School of Business and Technology. Dan has been instrumental in the development of online programs and distance learning initiatives in higher education since 1998.Dan earned his BA in Accounting from the University of Illinois – Springfield, and his MS in management accounting from Colorado State University, and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA). For his leadership role in pioneering online teaching and learning, Webster University presented him with a Presidential Recognition Award, and in 2002 he received the university’s highest honor, the Kemper Excellence in Teaching Award. Dan is co-author of the McGraw-Hill text Accounting: What the Numbers Mean, now in its 10th edition, which has been adopted by more than 200 colleges and universities nationwide and has been adapted for Australia and translated into Chinese. Dan enjoys sports of all kind, boating, and a good book.

Dr. Ann Kirschner

Ann Kirschner is University Professor at The City University of New York (CUNY) and president of Comma International, consultants in technology and education. She was the Dean of Macaulay Honors College at CUNY and Strategic Advisor to the Chancellor. She was founding director of the Women in Technology and Entrepreneurship (WiTNY) initiative at CUNY and Cornell Tech. She is a veteran of four start-ups in cable, satellite, and online. She was the first digital strategist for the National Football League, where she launched nfl.com and superbowl.com. A pioneer in e-learning, she founded FATHOM with Columbia University, London School of Economics, and other leading institutions. Ann Kirschner serves on the board of Strategic Cyber Ventures and Cricket Media. Her nonprofit boards include Public Agenda, Footsteps, the Paul and Daisy Soros Foundation, and FIRSTnyc. She is the author of Sala’s Gift: My Mother’s Holocaust Story (2006) and Lady at the OK Corral: the True Story of Josephine Marcus Earp (2013), and a frequent speaker and writer on innovation in media, technology, and education. She is a graduate of University of Buffalo, University of Virginia, and received her PhD from Princeton University, where she was Whiting Fellow in the Humanities.

Dr. Brad Cohen
Senior Vice Provost for Instructional Innovation
Ohio University
Dr. Cohen joined Ohio University in 2015 as its first Senior Vice Provost for Instructional Innovation. His interest in curricular innovation dates to his earliest efforts as a philosophy graduate student to experiment with pedagogical forms and what was then an emerging internet. He leads a number of strategic initiatives aimed at transforming the landscape of instruction at Ohio University, including learning spaces, and depends upon a growing team of dedicated staff focused on helping faculty improve their teaching, experiment in their courses in a variety of high and low tech ways, and launch innovative programs partially or fully online. He is multiply published and has presented widely on issues related to learning innovation in higher education. He is honored to have written the foreword to the recently released exceptional work of his former colleagues at the University of Minnesota, A Guide to Teaching in the Active Learning Classroom.

Jennifer Garrett

Jennifer Garrett is a creative and passionate sales and marketing leader with almost 20 years industry success to her credit. Garrett spent 12+ years in senior sales roles at Nickelodeon, MTV Networks International, and most recently at XO Group as Executive Vice President, National Enterprise Group. She now expertly leads Facebook's Education team as the Head of Industry over Education in North America.
As a new member of Facebook's cutting-edge leadership team, Garrett oversees the Education vertical within Global Marketing Solutions. Her team collaborates to drive growth for a variety of partners including online program managers, for-profit and not-for-profit institutions, and elearning businesses.
Before stepping into the media and sales worlds, Garrett practiced finance law at the firm Mayer, Brown and Platt. She graduated cum laude from Columbia University with a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and European History, and went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from New York University School of Law. Throughout her career, Garrett has consistently demonstrated the unique ability to seamlessly translate her experience and skills across industries and disciplines – from finance law to media sales and marketing, from international to domestic, from television to digital, from established international media conglomerate to digital niche lifestage brands and beyond.
Garrett speaks French and Swedish; in fact, she has dual citizenship in the United States and Sweden. She met her husband at a Metropolitan Opera summer performance in Central Park, and together they have twins and live in New York City. They enjoy traveling, whether abroad to Europe or to hike and ski in the Adirondacks and Vermont. When she’s not at work or shuttling between her kids’ piano classes and baseball practices, Garrett enjoys reading mystery novels set in interesting places and fancies herself quite the chocolate connoisseur.
Jessica Naeve
Director, Marketing Solutions - Education Vertical

Jessica Naeve joined LinkedIn in March 2015 as its first Director for the Education Vertical. She comes to LinkedIn with over 15 years of digital media experience. Most recently, she was a partner and head of the digital and technology practice at DeSilva+Phillips, a tech and media-focused investment bank in New York City. There she worked on dozens of deals in her 7+ year-tenure, including transactions with The New York Times Company, [x+1], TripAdvisor, Microsoft, Deloitte, and Condé Nast. Prior to D+P, Jessica was in charge of new media development for About.com, a NY Times Company, where she launched and ran the site’s online video business. Previous experience includes Director of Strategy and Finance at Primedia. Jessica was a founder of Sessions.edu, the first online school for Web, Graphic and Multimedia Design where she grew the business through three rounds of funding and accreditation to profitability. She began her career at Monitor Company as a strategy consultant and holds a BA from Harvard College as well as an MBA from Harvard Business School. Jessica is a member of the Hearing Health Foundation board of directors as well as a RedBadge Venture Partner.

Joshua Kim
Director of Digital Learning Initiatives

Josh Kim serves as a central point person for developing and coordinating digital learning programs across Dartmouth. Prior to starting this new role at Dartmouth, Josh was the Director of Learning and Technology for Dartmouth’s Master of Health Care Delivery Science (MHCDS) program. At the MHCDS program, Josh helped to build Dartmouth’s first graduate online/blended degree program designed for working professionals.
Josh is frequently asked to speak at national conferences and to consult with technology and publishing company leaders on topics of innovation and learning.
He has a PhD in sociology and demography from Brown University. He started his career on the faculty at West Virginia University, helped start Britannica.com’s education division in San Francisco, and was one of the original founders of Quinnipiac University Online. He has taught both on-ground and online courses in sociology, marketing, and higher education leadership.
Josh is best known for his daily blog on technology and learning on InsideHigherEd.com, a website that receives over 1.3 million unique monthly visitors.
Josh and his wife Julie, a pediatric oncologist at Dartmouth, live in Hanover and have two daughters who will be starting their own college careers in 2016 and 2017.

Josh’s experience spans finance, education and the development of digital enterprises. He is the founder of Salmon River Capital LLC, a New York-based private equity/venture capital firm focused on technology-enabled businesses in education, financial services, and other sectors. Over a 25-year career in active, principal investing, he has been involved in a broad range of successful companies, including several pioneering enterprises in the education sector. In addition, he has long been active in the non-profit education sector, with associations including New Leaders, New Classrooms, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He is also a non-executive director of several enterprises in the fin-tech/data, education, and other sectors.

Kate Klepper

Kate has served as the Associate Dean since 2005 overseeing the graduate portfolio at the D’Amore-McKim School. The School offers a variety of Master level programs including a Full-time MBA, Part-time MBA, Online MBA as well as a variety of specialty MBA and Master Degree and Graduate Certificate programs. Kate is a member of the D’Amore-McKim leadership team and also sits on the Graduate Programs and Assessment Committee within the School and the Graduate Dean’s Council for the University. She has been the primary representative to the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) throughout her career in higher education. She is currently serving as the Vice Chair of GMAC Board of Directors. Kate is also a member of the Board of the MBA Roundtable, and The Washington Campus. Prior to her current role at Northeastern Kate was the Dean of Graduate Admission at Babson College. She earned her BS in Consumer Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and her MBA from Northeastern.

Leah Jewell

Leah has been with Pearson in various roles for 30 years including sales, marketing, product development, and portfolio management. She is currently responsible for strategy and product development for employability learning solutions for Pearson North America focused on high school, higher ed, and adult lifelong learners. She is specifically working on accelerated skills pathways to industry credentials, micro and stacked credentials, and preparing students for a career beyond a degree. Leah is focused on partnering with employers and industry associations related to skills training and is on the board of the IoT Talent Consortium. She gathers learner and instructor insights to define outcomes that enable the collection of data to support the efficacy of the training solutions.

Lee Rubenstein

Lee Rubenstein serves as our edX VP of Business Development. He leads our engagements with prospects and partners including foundations, NGO’s, corporations, and governments both local and international. Lee has been building, running, and advising global businesses in the learning, communications, and media space for 20+ years. Most recently he served 5 years as President and COO of TBA Global, and as an advisor to several companies in the online entertainment space. Lee’s career has been focused on incorporating innovative technology and strategy to assist high profile brands improve their business results through education, communications, strategy, and media. Lee was part of the first executive team to take an “experiential” communications corporation public and then went on to establish, build, and lead various global communication and learning companies in the US and Europe for agency holding companies. Lee was also part of the executive team that recast TrainingNet into THINQ Learning solutions, an LMS company later sold to Saba. Lee is a graduate of Boston University, and serves on the Board of Governors of Tufts Medical Center, and the Corporate Advisory Council of Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Linda Lorimer

Linda spent almost 40 years serving higher education. She retired from Yale University in Spring 2016 after 34 years where she served in an array of senior positions, including vice president for Global & Strategic Initiatives. She oversaw the development of Yale’s burgeoning online education division and the expansion of Yale international programmes and centres. During her tenure, she was responsible for many administrative services, ranging from Yale’s public communications and alumni relations to sustainability, human resources, and the university press. Previously, Linda was president of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and chair of the board of the Association of American Colleges and Universities. She also served on the boards of several public companies, including as presiding director of the McGraw-Hill companies. She is a member of the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Matt Celano has almost 20 years of experience helping companies transform their customer acquisition models through digital innovation of complex web products and interactive marketing, resulting in five business process patents. As vice president of student acquisition for Pearson Online Learning Services, Matt spearheads a full-service, performance-based marketing and recruitment agency of 800+ subject matter experts across account services, new program development and launch, media and analytics, brand strategy, creative and web development, recruitment operations, and student acquisition.

Matthew Evans

Matt is Vice President of Pearson Online Learning Services where he leads the team responsible for delivering on the goals of our university partners nationally. In addition, he oversees operations across the POLS organization. Previously, he was Vice President in Pearson’s Corporate Finance & Strategy team which was responsible for all acquisition, disposal, and strategic planning activities for North America.
Prior to joining Pearson, Matt was a Venture Partner at Salmon River Capital, investing in growth companies in the education and e-commerce sectors. Earlier, Matt served as head of national expansion at New Leaders for New Schools, a social enterprise which recruits & trains principals for public schools across the US, and worked in Merrill Lynch’s investment banking group. Past and current boards include: Big Fish Games, the leading casual gaming company (sold to Churchill Downs Inc. for $885 million) and Imagine H2O, the leading accelerator of water technology innovation whose participants represent 10% of VC investment in the sector.
Matt holds a BA from Amherst College, magna cum laude, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Meredith McNally

Meredith McNally has worked as a digital media consultant in the education vertical at Google in New York City since 2012. She builds partnerships with national education clients across the K-12 and higher education sectors to provide media and technology solutions. Prior to Google, she worked for New Corporation in the Los Angeles, Toronto, and New York City offices selling advertising solutions within the consumer packaged goods industry. She holds a BA in Business Administration from the University of San Diego. She also holds a leadership role as an alumnae of her sorority, frequently speaking at national conferences to empower future women leaders.

Mike Gamson

Mike Gamson joined the company in August 2007. He currently leads LinkedIn's Global Solutions Organization across the company's 30 offices worldwide. The GSO includes various functions ranging from field sales and professional services representatives, to research analysts, account managers, and operational experts. There are three primary business groups within the GSO focused on servicing corporate customers – talent solutions, marketing solutions, and sales solutions. Previously, Mike was director of product marketing at Advent Software, a provider of enterprise software for investment managers, where he led the trading and order management business. Mike began his career as an entrepreneur in Costa Rica, founding a restaurant and boutique hotel in 1996. He sold the business to American investors and joined Bank of America as a financial analyst in Chicago the following year. Mike holds a BA from Amherst College.

Seth is a managing director of EY-Parthenon based in the Boston office and is a leader of EY's-Parthenon Education practice. Seth was with Parthenon for more than two decades before its combination with EY in August 2014. His extensive education experience spans the for-profit and public sectors across K-12, post-secondary, and corporate training. He advises clients on issues related to strategy development, operational improvement, performance management, investment due diligence, and new venture creation. His clients include a wide range of organizations, from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, school districts, universities, government agencies, and some of the world’s largest foundations. In addition, Seth has worked extensively with clients in the information publishing and financial services industries. Internally, he leads EY's-Parthenon Alumni Program. Prior to joining Parthenon, Seth was a Teach For America corps member and worked at SchoolNet. He is a founding member of the Board of Trustees of Excel Academy Charter Schools, a charter network in the Boston area. Seth holds a BA in American Studies, magna cum laude, from Amherst College. He received his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management and his Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Shubha Kumar, PhD, MPH

Shubha Kumar, PhD, MPH, is Assistant Professor of Clinical Preventive Medicine and Director of the Online Master of Public Health Program at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Her professional and research interests include management and leadership in global health and development, program planning & evaluation, health systems strengthening, and best practices in knowledge transfer and health education. She has successfully led the design and oversight of several programs in healthcare, disaster relief, and education, as well as launched an international humanitarian NGO for which she was the Chief Operating Officer. Her recent projects include capacity building of healthcare NGOs and the development and strengthening of emergency medical systems in sub-Saharan Africa. She is most well-known for her expertise in impact evaluation, particularly Social Return on Investment Analysis. She has lectured and consulted nationally and internationally, as well as developed the first distance education module on this subject. Dr. Kumar teaches in the USC Master of Public Health Program as well as directs the Business of Medicine curriculum for medical students. She earned her BS in Biology, and MPH and PhD in Healthcare Management & Policy from the University of California Los Angeles.
