Why did Professor Manda Williamson adopt Revel?
When Manda took over an Introduction to Psychology course she found that student engagement was low and 44% of students dropped out, failed or withdrew from the course. She knew she had to redesign the course and needed an affordable but engaging solution to reimagine learning for her students.
She saw how Revel could enable the teaching and learning she wanted for her students and felt it could help build efficacy in her course by engaging students with short digestible chunks of high-quality reading, so in Fall 2017 she adopted Revel.
How was Revel used in her course?
Her students completed their Revel reading and quizzes before class, which enabled her to use class time to address challenging topics and engage in group-based active learning activities.
Revel work was due every Sunday and Tuesday night, in which each assignment contained allocated pre-lesson reading and integrated activities. Data show students, on average, completed 64% of their reading within the 24 hours immediately before a due date and daily activity peaked right before assignments were due.
In addition, Williamson routinely viewed student Revel performance on the dashboard which allowed her to offer personalized feedback and timely intervention.
Did Revel improve student success over the study period?
Since adopting Revel retention increased, with the DFW rate dropping from 44% to 12%. Students are also highly engaged with the course material with Revel with data suggesting that students who obtain higher quiz scores in Revel tended to do better on course exams.
There were also notable changes in student performance:
- 100% of students completed the required aspects of the course.
- Students successfully completed 93% of Revel assignments.
- 96% of students passed the course.
Did students like using Revel?
During the latter part of the Spring 2018 semester, a survey was completed by 316 students that indicate the majority recognize the value of Revel, especially compared to other study books or products.
- 93% of students reported Revel was a more efficient way to study.
- 84% of students reported they spent more time using Revel.
- 72% of students reported they used Revel several times a week or daily.
When asked about their main reasons for liking Revel, the top two responses were that students liked how easy it was to use and they liked the quizzes.
Conclusion
Professor Williamson feels like her goals of teaching her students the wider skills that will equip them for college have been realized. She’s now able to deliver a course that teaches students how to learn, how to be critical thinkers and how to be able to converse about the topics they cover. Using Revel to create and deliver her course in the way described has allowed Professor Williamson the freedom and power to think bigger.
