Make a World of Difference Developing Real Communication in the Teenage Classroom
Rob Dean
What does the future hold for our teenage learners? What careers will they follow? Where will they travel? Who will they communicate with? It may be difficult to answer these questions precisely, but we can make some educated guesses about the kind of linguistic needs they will have. This session will consider ways of providing a solid foundation for effective communication in the wide world of their future, with a focus on naturalness, authenticity, 21st Century Skills and cultural awareness. The session will feature material including BBC video clips from the new teenage course from Pearson : "Wider World".
The Global Scale of English: an end-to-end solution for teaching, learning and assessing English
Mike Mayor
Since its publication in 2001, the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) has become a standard framework of reference for teachers, learners and content creators around the world – moving beyond its European roots. Whilst many institutions and ministries of education have benchmarked their language programs and proficiency targets to the CEFR – most practitioners have found the CEFR framework challenging to work with when it comes to lesson planning, curriculum design or the creation of assessments.
The Global Scale of English (GSE) is an extension of the CEFR for English, with hundreds more Can Do statements to address the needs of a wider range of learners. Critical to the project has been the development of tools and resources to support teachers in implementing the GSE (and the CEFR) in their day-to-day teaching. In this workshop, we will explore the GSE framework and the tools and resources that are freely available online.
