Skills for Writing is a unique digital and print solution designed to accelerate progress in writing by embedding the principles of the proven Grammar for Writing pedagogy. Developed in partnership with Professor Debra Myhill and her team from the University of Exeter, UK, Skills for Writing has been trialled and is proven to accelerate the rate of writing significantly – offering you a clear route to Key Stage 4 success.
- Provides engaging and interactive lessons with on-screen Student Books and many digital resources focused on building grammatical knowledge and improving writing.
- Motivates students to write independently, encouraging them to reflect on their writing and understand how to improve, with a range of auto-marked activities.
- Digital, fully-editable Teacher Guide included in the ActiveLearn service, containing detailed lesson plans to guide you through the units, showing how to use the resources and embed the pedagogy effectively.
- Cybergrammar to help teachers develop their own grammatical knowledge, providing information on a range of grammatical features to support understanding and interactive self-tests to put this learning into practice.
- Teaches grammar in a contextualised way, using extracts from real texts, always focusing on effects achieved, so students have a wider range of techniques with which to craft their own creative, effective texts.
- Face-to-face Professional Development workshops support teachers in understanding and using the Grammar for Writing pedagogy to improve students’ writing. Check with your local Pearson consultant for local availability.

Skills for Writing embeds the principles of the proven Grammar for Writing pedagogy, developed by Professor Debra Myhill and her team from the University of Exeter, UK. In their initial large-scale study, they found that students following the Grammar for Writing pedagogy made almost double the rate of progress in writing over the period of the intervention. This is broadly equivalent to making an extra level of progress over the period.
