A comprehensive look at voice disorders covering causes, symptoms, evaluation and treatment

Born to Talk is a comprehensive, contemporary, reader-friendly view of speech and language development from childhood to adulthood. With its primary focus on language development, the text encompasses new and exciting contributions to human language acquisition information. It covers the complex array of topics that provide the foundation for human communication and its development from birth through young adulthood. The 7th Edition includes a new chapter and appendices on language sampling, making it particularly useful for students and practitioners in speech-language pathology.

An accessible, comprehensive look at the field of voice and voice disorders
  • An integrated approach to voice disorders brings the knowledge of speech-language pathologists and medical professionals together to help readers understand how to treat the patient holistically.
  • Color photographs, detailed diagrams, and illustrations allow students to easily visualize and understand both the normal and disordered anatomy and physiology of the respiratory and laryngeal systems.
  • A clear and accessible writing style presents theoretical and clinical material in an understandable way so that students gain a firm grasp of essential concepts.
  • A focus on current topics in the field, including the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health; the role of evidence-based practice; multicultural perspectives in the provision of clinical services; and the effects of drugs on the voice, allows readers to become familiar with important areas of interest.
  • End-of-chapter summaries and review questions help readers understand and retain what they’ve read.
Revised and reorganized material helps students quickly and easily grasp important clinical concepts
  • NEW: Clinical notes, applications, and management techniques are now highlighted in text boxes so that readers can quickly make connections between theory and practice.
  • UPDATED: Disorders are reclassified based on the Classification Manual for Voice Disorders for a more logical flow of information.
  • UPDATED: Clinical considerations, such as patient compliance, therapy dropout, and therapy efficacy, are integrated into chapter 4, “Clinical Management.“
