Connect counseling theories with clinical practice

Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy offers an innovative look at emerging and well-established counseling theories. Each theory chapter begins with a brief approach overview and a biographical sketch of its developer, then moves on to the theory's key concepts, therapeutic process, therapeutic techniques and procedures, application, strengths and limitations. Particular attention is given each theory and how each applies to people from diverse backgrounds.

The 5th Edition removes the BETA format of previous editions in order to engage with the richness and complexity of each theory.

Hallmark features of this title

Foster understanding and critical thinking with pedagogical features

  • Skill development sections at the end of each chapter teach 1 or more key skills associated with the treatment system.
  • An ongoing case study highlights the Diaz family and shows how theories work with different genders, ages and cultural backgrounds.

New and updated features of this title

Engage students with the most up-to-date theories

  • NEW and EXPANDED: Reflect and Respond activities, previously called Exercises, help students apply aspects of the theories to their own experience.
  • NEW: A glossary was added to each chapter. In the eText version of this book, readers can click on the highlighted terms and be taken to the corresponding definition.

Utilize a fully revised and streamlined text

  • UPDATED: The text was updated throughout, with new material in every chapter, updated resources and references, and an improved writing style. The text includes a stronger multicultural focus with a revised multicultural section intended to draw attention to cultural considerations in each theoretical chapter in the text.
  • UPDATED: The BETA model (Background, Emotions, Thoughts and Actions) was removed from the text in order to create more space to engage with the richness and complexity of the theories. As a result, the four overview chapters that applied the BETA model were removed.
  • UPDATED: Large and small-group activities that had been in each chapter are now in the instructor's manual. Instructors are encouraged to use these activities in class so that students have an opportunity to apply what they are learning.
