Invigorate learning with the Enhanced Pearson eTextThe Enhanced Pearson eText provides a rich, interactive learning environment designed to improve student mastery of content with the following multimedia features:
- Embedded videos in each chapter illustrate key concepts and strategies. (See pages 18, 22, and 47 for examples.)

Additional text features include:
- Serves as a comprehensive early childhood training program:
- Each chapter is written around one of the CDA Functional Areas (safe, healthy, learning environment, physical, cognitive, communication, creative, self, social, guidance, families, program management, professionalism).
- Each chapter includes:
- Research on the chapter topic.
- Checklists for observing children.
- Appropriate materials and activities to use with children.
- Appropriate technology.
- Activities to use with children with disabilities.
-
-
- Written and organized to ensure optimal learning and classroom effectiveness:
- Learning Outcomes serve as the focus of each chapter and are then assessed at the end of the chapter with 10 to 15 brief questions in sections called Do You Know?
- The highly readable ideas are smoothly integrated into tried-and-true methods.
- The use of recent children’s books help both teachers and children enjoy hearing stories that will then lead into stimulating activities.
- Inclusion sections after every topic help teachers children with disabilities into the topic activities. (Example: Chapter 4 suggests follow-the-leader with vinyl adhesive footprints on the floor.)
- Brief, positive observation checklists in many chapters help teachers know which activities to provide.
- Suggestions for Learning Centers show how to free teachers to work with children who need help and let children choose and teach themselves how things work and what they can do.
- Learning Activities at the ends of chapters help students gather ideas for activities, make collections, redesign centers, and more. (Example: Chapter 9, using puppets to resolve turn-taking conflict.)
-
- NEW! Looks at the role of technology in young children’s lives and learning:
- Students learn which devices are appropriate in preschool and how to put them to best use (Chs. 1, 3, 5, and 6).
- Limiting screen time (on TV, computers, eBooks, iPads, and touch tablets) is discussed as a health issue, covering topics such as how such sedentary activities help cause obesity and how much is too much (Ch. 2).
- Nine Digital devices that may or may not be developmentally appropriate for this age group are discussed in Chapter 3, Learning Environment. The appropriate use of these devices then appears throughout the text.
-
- NEW! Shows how traditional learning centers can be used outside to give children fresh air and sunshine–for example, dramatic play, golf cart with wheels removed, hut, pirate ship, fire truck, and more (Ch. 3).
- NEW! Covers movement-based learning and the development of fine-motor skills to show how children use muscles for writing and reading and how their locomotor activities help them learn about emotions, develop problem solving skills, and more (Ch. 4).
- Includes additional information for starting children out successfully with reading and writing, including:
- NEW! Using home language with the dual language children in the classroom (Ch. 6).
- NEW! Helping children emerge into writing using their own names.
- NEW! Linking brain development and children’s play is examined in discussions such as how to know what to expect about individuals and how to help them progress. (For example: using singing and early music to enhance the development of the cognitive processes of the brain (Ch. 7).
- Photographing children’s faces to make them feel good about themselves (Ch. 8).

Dr. Janice J. Beaty is not only a writer of many college texts for early childhood educators but is also a traveler. Her books for Pearson include Skills for Preschool Teachers, 10/e, 2017 (also in Chinese), Early Literacy in Preschool & Kindergarten with L.Pratt, 4/e, 2015, Observing Development of the Young Child, 8/e, 2014, Fifty Early Childhood Literacy Strategies, 3/e, 2013 , (both also in Chinese). She is also the author of Preschool Appropriate Practices, 4/e, 2014, (also in Chinese). She has visited early childhood programs in China, Russia, Poland, and Bermuda and throughout Missouri where she has done training of Foster Grandparents who work in Head Start classrooms. She taught for 20 years at Elmira College where she developed a CDA Training of Trainers workshop and presented it in Elmira, NY, Columbia, SC, Atlanta, GA, & Orlando, FL. When she is not writing early childhood texts, you might find her “out west” in one of the national parks featured in her latest children’s books: Jarod and the Mystery of the Joshua Trees, 2015, or Jarod and the Mystery of the Petroglyphs, 2016, Sunstone Press, for middle school readers.
