A streamlined approach develops expert problem solvers and critical thinkers
Principles of Chemistry: A Molecular Approach introduces core concepts without sacrificing rigor. Nivaldo Tro presents chemistry visually through macroscopic, molecular and symbolic multi-level images to help students see connections between chemistry and the world around them. Throughout this student-friendly text, active learning tools engage students in becoming expert problem solvers and critical thinkers.
The 4th Edition pairs pedagogical innovation with insights from learning design and educational research to create an active, integrated and easy-to-use framework.
Hallmark features of this title
- 4-step problem-solving approach (Sort, Strategize, Solve, Check) connects concepts to the problem and solution by developing a conceptual plan for each problem.
- Multipart images help students see the relationship between the formulas they write down on paper (symbolic), the world they see around them (macroscopic), and the atoms and molecules that compose the world (molecular).
- Abundant molecular-level views show students the connection between everyday processes visible to the eye and the behavior of atoms and molecules.
- Streamlined coverage of necessary general chemistry topics provides instructors with a text that covers only the topics that they needs. At 19 chapters, this text has no separate nonmetals, metals or coordination compounds chapters.
New and updated features of this title
- Missed This? feature appears in the end-of-chapter Self Assessment Quizzes and in each odd-numbered Problems by Topic exercise and provides sections to read to help students remediate where necessary.
- Chapter 5 provides topically focused coverage. Chemical Reactions and Solutions have been divided into two separate chapters (now Chapters 4 and 5): 1 on chemical reactions (including stoichiometry) and another on solutions (including aqueous reactions). This new organization allows a sharper focus in each chapter and reduces the cognitive load for students.
- Extensively updated art program better directs students' attention to key elements in the art and promotes understanding of the processes depicted. Dozens of figures in the 5th Edition were reviewed by learning design specialists to ensure they are clearly navigable for students and now include more helpful annotations and labels to help readers focus on key concepts.
Features of Mastering Chemistry for the 4th Edition
- NEW: Key Concept Interactives combine artwork from the textbook with 2D and 3D animations for a dynamic viewing and learning experience. Students navigate these digital, interactive self-checks to learn key concepts. Assignable assessment available in Mastering.
- NEW: Interactive Worked Examples are digital versions of select worked examples from the text that instruct students how to break down problems using Tro's Sort, Strategize, Solve, and Check technique.
- UPDATED: Data Interpretation and Analysis Problems use real data from real life situations to ask students to analyze, interpret and interact with data, providing practice in reading graphs, digesting tables and making data-driven decisions.
- NEW: Ready-to-Go Study Tools in the Mastering Study Area include all the things students need when completing homework or practicing for exams: videos, practice quizzes, practice exams, and worked examples.
- The Chemistry Primer helps students remediate chemistry math skills and prepare for their first college chemistry course. Pre-built Assignments ensure students practice and maintain their math skills. Remediation includes tutorials, wrong-answer specific feedback, video instruction, and stepwise scaffolding.

About our author
Nivaldo Tro has been teaching college Chemistry since 1990 and is currently teaching at Santa Barbara Community College. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did postdoctoral research on ultrafast reaction dynamics in solution. Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, the Research Corporation, and the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Ali, Kyle, and Kaden. In his leisure time, Professor Tro enjoys mountain biking, surfing, and being outdoors with his family.
