The topics and concepts presented are discussed along with approaches to teaching and specific activities and experiences for each concept.
- Occasional lesson plans within the chapters show students how one teacher might apply the concepts in that chapter. Most lesson plans appear in Appendix A, and recipes are presented in Appendix B.
- Concepts and Ideas for Teaching boxed sections appear in every chapter, and Student Learning Activities appear at the end of each chapter.
- Readers are keyed to practical, unique, “bright ideas” taken from the authors’ experiences in the classroom.
- Teachers get support in teaching mathematics and reading/language arts, and meeting the Common Core requirements through specific, strong chapters included for teaching these areas.
- Help for teaching all content areas—science, art, music, physical education, nutrition, and social-emotional health—is included throughout the text.
- Comprehension is enhanced through a unified chapter pedagogy, which follows a specific format: learning outcomes; introductory comments, including content information; approach to teaching; chapter summary; student learning activities; and suggested resources.
Invigorate learning with the Enhanced Pearson eText
The Enhanced Pearson eText provides a rich, interactive learning environment designed to improve student mastery of content with the following multimedia features:
- Embedded videos. Students get opportunities to see into real classrooms and see examples of the concepts and ideas in action through the digitally integrated video clips supporting and illustrating key chapter ideas and concepts. Every chapter includes three to six of these digital videos. (See pages 203, 226, and 349 for examples.)
- Check Your Understanding of chapter content. Exercises matched to chapter learning outcomes help readers apply the concepts and ensure that they master the learning outcomes. Exercises and suggested feedback are provided in the Pearson eText. (See pages 211, 236, and 351 for examples.)
- End of Chapter Self-Check. Embedded assessments with feedback help students review new terms and concepts and encourage reflection and discussion on the issues of the chapter. These are presented within the Pearson eText as interactive quizzes. (See pages 218, 236, and 369 for examples.)
