Integrated thematic instruction at the paragraph and essay level

In Concert engages students by presenting each chapter in the context of a resonant theme, such as Internet dating, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Student and professional essays start each chapter as the basis for instruction, illustration and practice.

The 3rd Edition is the second text in a 2-part series that shows reading and writing as a single process of understanding and expressing ideas and illustrates how they work together in concert. This volume explores paragraphs and essays; In Harmony concentrates on sentences and paragraphs.

  • NEW: 6 new professional readings offer more challenging pieces on interesting topics.
  • NEW: 6 new student essays model the longer, more complex style of writing that instructors expect.
  • REVISED: 2 new themes, social injustice and living in a culturally diverse world, have been added to the Thematic Reader.
  • NEW: Look It Up! prompts students to investigate a theme-related topic on their smartphones, before generating a written response.
  • NEW: Making Connections Between the Readings is a set of paragraph- and essay-writing activities that provide discussion materials, as well as opportunities to compare/contrast readings, analyze the writing feature, and synthesize ideas.

Features of MyLab Reading & Writing Skills for the 3rd Edition

  • Students' strengths and weaknesses are diagnosed by a pre-assessment known as the Path Builder, which then offers up a personalized Learning Path that includes targeted practice and multimodal activities to help them improve over time.
  • The Lexile® Framework for Reading is applied to diagnose each student's reading ability. After an initial Locator Test, students receive readings and practice at their estimated reading level. Throughout the course, periodic diagnostic tests incrementally adjust their level with increasing precision.
