For laboratory courses in Human/Animal Physiology
Noted for its clear language, logical information flow, and emphasis on developing critical skills, this versatile manual covers all of the material needed for a one-semester human or animal physiology laboratory course. Over 90 exercises are organized into 22 chapters that are suitable for a two- to four-hour lab period.
The Eleventh Edition incorporates inquiry-based components, including an “Explain This” feature, which asks students to thoughtfully consider the aim of each exercise that they perform, and also contains a new scientific inquiry and graphing Appendix — making this a perfect complement to any book. Instructors may pair the lab manual with other technologies such as PhysioEx 9.1, PowerLab, Vernier, and BIOPAC to effectively engage students. This impressive collaboration between Woodman and Tharp gives instructors the opportunity to truly foster critical thinking skills and add a dynamic element to their laboratory courses.
  • NEW! Inquiry-based components encourage lab students to think scientifically. The 11th Edition now includes “Explain This” questions that focus on interpretation and analysis throughout a procedure.
  • NEW! A Scientific Method Appendix provides information on interpreting graphs and using computers to graph.
  • UPDATED! The 11th Edition is now integrated with PhysioEx 9.1. PhysioEx 9.1 lab simulations are free-form experiments that allow students to interact on a deeper level of the scientific process.
  • UPDATED! The text includes instructions on utilising PowerLab, Vernier and BIOPAC data acquisition systems to further enhance learning.
  • UPDATED! More Clinical Application feature boxes show students the relevance of what they’re learning and how it relates to clinical situations, diseases, and medical devices.
  • UPDATED! Frequent “Stop and Think” features prompt students to consider key questions before moving on to the next step in an exercise. “Stop and Think” encourages critical thinking and observation skills, which are essential for successfully completing the lab report.
There are 90 wide-ranging exercises, organised into 22 exercise chapters that are suitable for two- to four-hour laboratory periods and flexible enough to use in one-semester introductory courses or upper-level one- or two-semester courses. Features of the lab manual include:
  • NEW! PhysioEx 9.1 offers 12 online lab simulations with 63 activities that instructors can use to replace expensive, dangerous, time-consuming wet labs or any exercises requiring certain equipment or specimens.
  • Laboratory Reports engage students in using data tables, graphs, and critical thinking questions to help organise and understand their lab results.
  • The inclusion of additional background information helps students understand material in chapters covering renal physiology, reflex functions, exercise physiology, and cardiovascular function.
  • Coverage of diabetes reflects current techniques for measuring blood glucose and identifying the different types of diabetes.
  • Critical thinking questions on every lab report challenge students to apply what they’ve learned.
  • Student lab objectives at the beginning of each chapter identify learning goals and give instructors a basis for assessment.
  • A materials list at the start of each activity simplifies lab set-up and selection.
  • Spiral binding and Laboratory Safety Guidelines, located inside the front cover, make the manual a user-friendly tool that emphasises lab safety.
  • A Numbered Lab Activities List makes it easy for students to identify the action steps in an experiment.

  • Inquiry-based components have been added to encourage lab students to think scientifically. The Eleventh Edition now includes “Explain This” questions that focus on interpretation and analysis throughout a procedure.
  • The New Scientific Method Appendix provides information on interpreting graphs and using computers to graph.
  • The Eleventh Edition is now integrated with PhysioEx 9.1. PhysioEx 9.1 lab simulations are new free-form experiments that interact with students on a deeper level within the scientific process.
  • The integrated technology accompanying the text utilizes PowerLab, Vernier, and BIOPAC data acquisition systems.
  • More Clinical Application feature boxes show students the relevance of what they’re learning and how it relates to clinical situations, diseases, and medical devices.
  • Frequent “Stop and Think” features prompt students to consider key questions before moving on to the next step in an exercise. “Stop and Think” encourages critical thinking and observation skills, which are essential for successfully completing the lab report.

David Woodman joined the project in the Eighth Edition and is now fully responsible for the manuscript revision, though Dr. Tharp remains a consultant as needed. David has used this manual in his own lab for over a decade and has a solid grasp of the content, style, and technology in the text, as well as the student interests, goals and challenges encountered in this course.
Dr. Gerald Tharp is a retired professor of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He signed the contract for this title back in 1973, with Burgess Publishing Co. in Minneapolis, and the title was later passed to Macmillan Inc. of New York, which was succeeded by Prentice-Hall for the Eighth Edition in 2001. The Eighth Edition was the last time that Tharp actively participated in the revision process.
