A standard in EMS education for over 35 years

Emergency Care has provided generations of EMT students with the practical information they need to succeed in the classroom and the field. Using the National EMS Education Standards as a foundation, the text reflects the most current EMS practices. Critical-thinking and decision-based features help students integrate need-to-know material into real-life scenarios.

The 14th Edition has been significantly reorganized to incorporate the assessment, treatment and care of children and older adults. Patient care features have been fine-tuned, and a new Infectious Diseases and Sepsis chapter explores the infectious diseases EMTs encounter.

Hallmark features of this title

Strategically organized material

  • DOT Objectives are listed and follow the DOT numbering system. Each chapter lists the US DOT objectives along with page references.
  • FYI sections broaden students' understanding of individual topics and provide material that goes beyond the DOT objectives.
  • Chapter Review sections include a summary of key points, key terms and definitions, review questions, case studies and more.

Real-world guidance

  • Street Scenes place chapter concepts within the context of real-life calls.
  • Decision Points call out key decisions that are made during assessment and care of a patient.
  • Critical Decision-Making exercises give students practice making patient-care choices on the scene.

New and updated features of this title

New focus on children and older adults, plus revised guidance

  • NEW: Pediatric and Geriatric assessment, care and treatment is integrated throughout the text. Each chapter now includes patient scenarios covering a range of ages.
  • UPDATED: The most current American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care are adhered to in all chapters of the text.
  • NEW: The Patient Care feature that appears in clinical chapters has been fine-tuned to address Principles of Care FIRST. It's followed by actions the EMT may need to employ in patient care.

New and reworked content

  • NEW: A new Infectious Diseases and Sepsis chapter (Chapter 24) gives an overview of common infectious diseases EMTs may encounter. It also describes the conditions that lead to sepsis and signify sepsis may be occurring.
  • UPDATED: The Secondary Assessment chapter was reworked into three more focused chapters that cover specific aspects of the EMT's role and care of patients.
  • UPDATED: The Operations section (Section 7) includes new triage procedures and updated guidelines for handling incident scenes.
