For courses in reading assessment and diagnosis.

Research-based, clinically verified tests help users assess and diagnose students' reading abilities (Preprimer to 9th Grade)

The Ekwall/Shanker Reading Inventory (ESRI) features 40 diagnostic tests to help educators, school psychologists, resource teachers and reading specialists successfully assist individual students in developing their reading ability. This comprehensive guide can be used to measure nine different areas of reading, including oral and silent reading ability, listening comprehension, phonemic awareness, concepts about print, and more.

Adaptable to most reading programs, the 7th Edition fits well with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

Hallmark features of this title

  • 40 diagnostic tests help educators easily assess the major reading subskills before moving on to the Graded Word List and Reading Passages tests. The Reading Passages Test includes four different passages for each of the reading levels, Preprimer through 9th Grade.
  • The Group Silent Reading Comprehension Level helps readers use the Graded Reading Passages as a large group assessment to determine the silent reading comprehension level of each student (p. 306).
  • Specific directions, crib sheets, flow charts and examples guide teachers in determining a diagnosis appropriate for a student and translating that data into a clear, complete report (Part One, Section 4).
  • Lexile Ratings for each of the Graded Reading Passages allow educators to easily align this material with Common Core State Standards (p. 320).

New and updated features of this title

  • UPDATED: A Glossary of Reading Assessment Terms appears at the end of the manual.
  • UPDATED: A precise description of how the assessments correlate to Common Core State Standards helps teachers see how the skills assessed can meet the standards established for guiding instruction (Part One, Section 1).
