A balanced introduction to the fundamentals of biomaterials

Biomaterials presents the right level of biomaterials concepts to undergraduate engineering majors. With an overall emphasis on tissue engineering, it covers classes of materials commonly used in biomedical applications, followed by the biocompatibility of materials with the biological environment. Carefully selected in-depth applications illustrate the intersection of biology and materials.

The 2nd Edition explores new topics in materials science and state-of-the-art biological techniques. New problems, examples and color images help introduce critical concepts.

Hallmark features of this title

Balanced coverage of a multidisciplinary subject

  • Early coverage of materials science clarifies ideas encountered in later chapters on the biological response.
  • Topics build from basic chemical/structural organization of materials through physical and mechanical properties to material processing/manufacturing.
  • Clearly illustrates the complex intersection of biology and materials science where appropriate. The inclusion of characterization methods and regulatory issues helps students grasp the big picture.

Student-focused features

  • Key measurement methods and techniques for determining/measuring the material or biological properties described are included at the end of each chapter.
  • Learning objectives in each chapter guide students through the material.

New and updated features of this title

Current coverage of materials science

  • UPDATED: Expanded sections delve into the steps to U.S. regulatory approval for devices and therapies using biomaterials (Ch. 1) and rapid manufacturing of biomaterials (Ch. 6).
  • UPDATED: The discussion of spatial patterning of biomaterial surfaces is expanded and reorganized for further clarity (Ch. 7).

State-of-the art biological techniques

  • NEW: New and emerging biological characterization techniques, such as various types of ‘omics analysis, single-cell characterization techniques, and confocal microscopy, are explored in new sections. (Ch. 9).
  • NEW: Cutting-edge knowledge about the subtypes of cells involved in the innate and acquired immune response are summarized in text and figures (Chs. 10 & 12).
  • UPDATED: Required tests for mutagenesis are discussed in an expanded section (Ch. 14).

Student-focused features

  • NEW: End-of-chapter problems let students apply their knowledge. Additional example problems demonstrate the utility of various assays. Color images illustrate important histological concepts.
