Pharmacology for Nurses: A Pathophysiologic Approach, Fifth Edition
  • Helps students understand how pharmacology relates to disease and patient care. The holistic, pathophysiological approach is organized according to body systems and diseases.
  • Brings together coverage of all relevant disciplines associated with each drug. Complete information on relevant anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology is integrated in the same chapter in which each drug is discussed.
  • Helps students prepare and implement care plans by showing how pharmacology relates to key nursing processes. Exclusive, up-to-date Nursing Process Application features walk students through the way pharmacology relates to patient assessment, nursing diagnoses, planning patient outcomes, patient-centered care, and evaluating outcomes.
  • UPDATED: Nursing Process Application charts have been revised to contain current applications to clinical practice with key lifespan and diversity considerations noted.
  • Simplifies pharmacology by focusing on representative drugs in each class. To facilitate learning, this text uses drug prototypes in which the most representative drugs in each classification are introduced in detail. Students are less intimidated by the material when they can focus their learning on one representative drug in each class.
  • Walks students step by step through drug actions. Easy-to-understand Mechanism in Action animations allow students to identify key drug mechanisms more clearly.
  • Presents extensive self-assessment review
    • An end-of-chapter review of the major concepts allows students to gauge their understanding.
    • NEW: Check Your Understanding questions
    • appear throughout the drug chapters to reinforce student knowledge.
    • NEW: A Patient-Focused Case Study with critical-thinking questions, and an additional set of Critical Thinking questions are included in this edition. All of the answers are provided, allowing students to check their retention of chapter material.
    • UPDATED: End-of-chapter NCLEX®-RN-style questions now include alternative format items and complete rationales.
  • Connects pharmacology to nursing practice. Interesting features such as Complementary and Alternative Therapies, Treating the Diverse Patient, and Lifespan Considerations clearly place the drugs in context with their clinical applications.
    • NEW: Community-Oriented Practice features provide important information that nurses need to convey to their patients to ensure that they receive effective pharmacotherapy after leaving the hospital or clinical setting.
    • Evidence-Based Practice features illustrate how current medical research is used to improve patient teaching.
  • Helps students identify and manage potential side effects and safety issues
    • UPDATED: Black Box Warnings issued by the FDA are included for all appropriate drug prototypes.
    • Patient Safety illustrates potential pitfalls that can lead to medication errors.
    • PharmFacts contain statistics and facts that are relevant to the chapter.
  • UPDATED: Helps students master today's best standards for high-quality, safe care. The QSEN competencies related to patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, and patient safety are incorporated throughout the features and Nursing Process Application charts.
  • EXPANDED: Gives students comprehensive and reliable information about the newest drugs. Information is included on more than 40 new drugs, drug classes, indications, and therapies that have been approved since the last edition.
    • NEW: A new chapter on Individual Variations in Drug Response focuses on specific factors that can influence pharmacotherapeutic outcomes.
    • EXPANDED: The chapter on autonomic drugs has been split into two chapters to reflect increased used of these drug classes in pharmacotherapeutics.
  • EXPANDED: Visually supports students in providing patient-centered care. Pharmacotherapy Illustrated diagrams break down complex topics into easily understood formats to help students visualize the connection between pharmacology and the patient.

Personalize learning with MyNursingLab®MyNursingLab is an an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to engage students in the Pharmacology course and improve results. Its guided learning path is proven to help students think like a nurse as they move beyond memorization to true understanding through application.
  • Help save time and improve class results with Gradebook and Advanced Reporting. MyNursingLab's gradebook allows instructors to manage all of the course grades in one place. Instructors can import/export from popular learning management systems, manipulate and modify individual student grades, and calculate final grades. With MyNursingLab's advanced reporting capabilities instructors can run a number of activity reports for single or multiple students, assignments, and sections. Additional reports include item analysis and Study Plan reports.
  • Improve students’ clinical reasoning.
    • NEW: Clinical Decision-Making Cases* ask students to identify clinically-salient patient information and make informed decisions at key moments in patient care scenarios. The Clinical Decision-Making Cases help students practice “thinking like a nurse” as they analyzed information and make sound decisions to provide safe and effective patient care. *Five Clinical Decision-Making Cases are available in select MyNursingLab courses.
    • Content Case Studies help students improve their clinical judgment. As each of these gradable cases unfolds, students will synthesize the information they learn in the course and apply what they’ve learned to client care scenarios. Most MyNursingLab courses include 10 Case Studies and each Case Study includes 10 application-level (or higher) questions.
  • Prepare students for the NCLEX-RN Exam
    • Alternate Item Format Questions in MyNursingLab allow students to practice with many of the question types that they will see on the NCLEX-RN.
    • NEW: More NCLEX-style study questions and two new 60-question Practice Tests are included in MyNursingLab.
  • Guide students beyond memorization to true understanding using the Learning Path with Prioritized Study Plan. MyNursingLab’s Learning Path includes Study Plans with carefully edited study materials and multimedia learning aids. Each MyNursingLab lesson includes a diagnostic pretest using NCLEX-style questions. Based on the results of the pretest, a prioritized Study Plan is generated specifically for each student. Depending on where they need help, students will work through the tutorial exercises in their guided learning path to Review, Remember, and Apply key concepts.
  • Digital access anytime, anywhere with the Pearson eText. Most MyNursingLab courses are available with the interactive Pearson eText. The Pearson eText gives students access to their textbook anytime, anywhere. In addition to note taking, highlighting, and bookmarking, the Pearson eText offers interactive and sharing features. Rich media options let students watch lecture and example videos as they read or do their homework. Instructors can share their comments or highlights, and students can add their own, creating a tight community of learners in your class.

Leland Norman Holland, Jr., PhD (Norm),
over 20 years ago, started out like many scientists, planning for a career in basic science research. He was quickly drawn to the field of teaching in higher medical education, where he has spent most of his career. Among the areas where he has been particularly effective are preparatory programs in nursing, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and allied health. Dr. Holland is both a professor and supporter in nursing education nationwide. He brings to the profession a depth of knowledge in biology, chemistry, and medically related subjects such as microbiology, biological chemistry, and pharmacology. Dr. Holland's doctoral degree is in medical pharmacology. He is very much dedicated to the success of students and their preparation for careers in health care. He continues to motivate students in the lifelong pursuit of learning.
Carol Quam Urban, PhD, RN, Associate Professor,
is the Director of the School of Nursing, and an Associate Dean in the College of Health and Human Services, at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She has been on the faculty at Mason and considers the study of pharmacology to be a course that truly integrates nursing knowledge, skills, and interdisciplinary teamwork. She credits her students, past and present, for providing a never-ending source of real-world stories that make learning about pharmacology enjoyable in class. She has published the Pearson textbook, Pharmacology: Connections to Nursing Practice with Dr. Adams.
