Phlebotomy Simplified is a step-by-step, practice-oriented approach to blood collection procedures for the beginning health care student. It can also serve as a practical reference guide for health care professionals responsible for blood and specimen collection in diverse settings, including hospitals, ambulatory clinics, home health care and pediatric clinics.

The 3rd edition has been reconfigured to make student learning objectives a more direct extension of the entry-level competencies of the National Accrediting Committee for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

Up-to-date standards of safe, effective blood collection

  • Communication, clinical, technical and safety skills used in phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures are covered in depth.
  • Step-by-step technical procedures are presented throughout the program, as well as in illustrations, photographs and flowcharts.
  • Clinical alert symbols indicate where extra caution is needed to prevent harm or preanalytical errors.

Practical applications

  • NAACLS competencies are linked to relevant chapters and to coverage level (basic or intermediate).
  • Each chapter ends with critical-thinking activities, including study questions, problem-solving cases and competency assessments.
  • Commentary or a case analysis with discussion questions follows the Advocating Patient Safety section.

Guidance in specific procedures and skills

  • Enhanced: The most up-to-date, comprehensive safety features of phlebotomy supplies and equipment are featured in the chapter on new equipment (Ch. 6). The chapter includes new images from key manufacturers in the industry.
  • Comprehensive: Current industry standards covered are from the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), risk and error reduction, patient and worker safety, needlestick prevention, and The Joint Commission.
  • Expanded: Sections on vein selection and preparation and on venipuncture complications (preanalytical errors) have been expanded upon for this edition.
  • Introduced: A new appendix advises users on the acceptable blood volumes to withdraw from pediatric and neonatal patients.

Pedagogical aids

  • Refreshed: An updated medical terminology section, along with a glossary, helps students use the field's specialized terminology in practice.
  • Expanded: Many new images, figures and charts appear in this edition. This includes detailed anatomical figures depicting the relationship of blood vessels to nerves in the arm and hand, and photos of new phlebotomy technology, equipment and supplies.
