Chemistry: A Molecular Approach, 6th Edition, AP Edition © 2023
Nivaldo J. Tro

Chemistry: A Molecular Approach presents chemistry visually through macroscopic, molecular and symbolic multi-level images to help students see the connections between chemistry and the world around them. Nivaldo Tro's consistent problem-solving approach (sort, strategize, solve, check) and active learning tools engage students in becoming expert problem solvers and critical thinkers.
The 6th edition presents interactive digital features that guide students through key concepts and the problem-solving process. Updates reflect current research on the COVID-19 vaccine and an extensive diversity, equity and inclusion review.
Actively engage students
- Conceptual connections and self-assessment quizzes give students practice studying as they extinguish misconceptions and deepen understanding of key topics.
Develop expert problem-solvers
- 4-step problem-solving approach (sort, strategize, solve, check) connects concepts to the problem and solution by developing a conceptual plan for each problem.
- 2 & 3 column worked examples break down problem-solving steps: the 1st column outlines the problem-solving procedure and reasoning behind each step; the 2nd and 3rd columns show how to implement the steps with examples.
Visualize chemistry
- Multipart molecular images depicted through macroscopic, microscopic and symbolic perspectives help students better visualize and understand chemistry.
New and updated features of this title
- New & revised: End-of-chapter questions provide 176 new questions throughout the book, and 378 revised questions. Many new end-of-chapter questions involve the interpretation of graphs and data.
- New: Diversity, equity and inclusion review ensures the content reflects the diversity, depth and breadth of all learners' lived experiences.
- Updated: All data and research reflect the most recent research and measurements throughout the text, including end-of-chapter problems.
- New: Key concept interactives are digital, interactive self-checks that students navigate to learn key concepts. Assignable assessment available in Mastering.
- New: 15 Key concept videos combine text art with 2D and 3D animations for a dynamic viewing and learning experience while 25 new interactive worked examples help students apply the sort, strategize, solve, and check technique.
- New: The chemistry diagnostic assesses students' levels of understanding in the context of math relevant to their chemistry course and creates personalized plans to help them remediate the math skills necessary to succeed in the chemistry sequence.
- New & updated: 176 New end-of-chapter questions from the book are in Mastering®, and 378 are revised. All new end-of-chapter questions are assignable in Mastering.
- New: Online problem sets, designed to be less searchable, are web-based, online-only problems. These are algorithmically randomized, provide answer-specific feedback and will be continually updated and expanded
- New: Hint structure in Mastering provides just-in-time resources at the exact moment students need help. Students can view a worked example, watch a video or try a similar problem. Hints keep them in the platform, save time and improve problem-solving skills.
- New: 54 Key concept interactives in the eTextbook break down key topics and guide students through an interactive experience with opportunities for practice.
- New: 15 Key concept videos combine text art with animations for a dynamic viewing and learning experience with narration and brief live-action clips of Tro explaining key concepts.
- New: 25 Interactive worked examples are digital versions of select worked examples from the text that instruct students how to break down problems using the sort, strategize, solve, and check technique.
- New: Predict feature is now interactive in each chapter of the eTextbook and asks students to predict the outcome of the topic they are about to read. After the student reads the section, Predict confirms whether the student predicted correctly or incorrectly and why.
- Interactive conceptual connections develop conceptual understanding instead of memorizing mathematical operations, address students' misconceptions and feature answer-specific feedback written by the author.
- 64 For practice problems provide wrong-answer feedback and links that direct students to correlating places in the eTextbook and media.

Nivaldo J. Tro
Santa Barbara City College
Nivaldo Tro has been teaching college chemistry since 1990 and is currently teaching at the College of Creatives at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and at Santa Barbara City College. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did postdoctoral research on ultrafast reaction dynamics in solution. Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, the Research Corporation, and the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann. In his leisure time, Professor Tro enjoys cycling, surfing, and being outdoors.
