Keeping the learner as the focus of the mathematics classroom becomes more challenging when the “classroom” is spread over space and sometimes time. This session provides suggestions for helping online students become motivated, confident learners and users of mathematics. Topics include supporting student understanding of themselves as learners, developing mathematics study skills, orienting students toward a growth mindset, promoting student-directed learning, and encouraging mathematics learning communities.

Dr. Barbara Johnson, Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis
Barbara Johnson has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics and a PhD in educational studies. She currently teaches and coordinates the mathematics content courses for elementary teachers at Indiana University — Purdue University Indianapolis. She is committed to the development of strong mathematical thinkers and pursues that through her work with future mathematics educators, her research, and her writing.
Her research focuses primarily on affect in mathematics education, including growth mindset, identity development, relationship, and context. She also works to make mathematics accessible and relevant through curriculum. Her published work includes college algebra, intermediate algebra, and developmental mathematics series and supplements such as the Personal Inventory Assessment Mathematics Instructor’s Manual.
