In this session, Debbie Schmidt discusses backward design, which asks us not to consider what we want to teach the students, but rather what do we want the students to learn? Also called Understanding by Design (UbD), the three stage process guides us to determine the outcomes we desire then choose performance measures and finally instruction to support our desired outcomes.

Debbie Schmidt is the faculty advisor in life sciences for the Eastern US and Canada for Pearson. She earned her master’s degrees in audiology and in human anatomy & physiology instruction.
As the lead instructor for A&P at Hocking College, she had such success with Mastering® A&P that she was invited to share her experience with other faculty. Schmidt continued this work joining Pearson full time in 2015 and teaching part time. She lives in Granville, Ohio with her high school sweetheart husband, Mark, their children, Tyler and Chelsea, and their German shepherd, Sadie.
