In this session, Dr. Jess Alberts explores contributors to unequal divisions of domestic labor and examines strategies that can help address them. With most women entering the paid workforce and high housing costs leading to more shared living arrangements, conflict over the division of labor is a concern for many. Consequently, disagreement over household tasks is one of the major reasons given for relationship conflict among those who cohabitate.
Dr. Jess Alberts, Arizona State University
Dr. Jess Alberts is a President’s Professor in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University, co-author of Human Communication in Society, and founder of the Transformation Project, which focuses on how communication can transform people’s lives. Her research focuses on conflict in personal and professional relationships. She is particularly interested in marital conflict, how couples and roommates divide domestic chores, and how couples conduct daily interactions. In addition, she explores ways to reduce workplace bullying and to improve legal negotiations and community mediation practices. Because of her experiences studying marital conflict, she appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss how couples can fight and complain more effectively. She is published in communication, legal and relationship research journals, and her work has been disseminated by major newspapers, magazines, and news organizations.
