About the speakers

Melissa Brown

Melissa Brown is executive director of Indiana Connections Academy (INCA) and Indiana Career Connections Academy. She has more than a decade of online education experience and a master’s in information and learning technologies from the University of Colorado at Denver. Ms. Brown combines knowledge of the latest advances in distance learning with hands-on experience as: former director of the virtual school program for Indianapolis Public Schools, online high school language arts teacher, instructional design developer, and non-profit program manager. As a self-described online learning advocate, Ms. Brown knows it’s great teachers who make the difference at INCA. “We simply have the best teachers around. Period.”

Dean Heus

Dean Heus is principal of several Wauwatosa district schools including: Wauwatosa Virtual Academy, Vel R. Phillips Juvenile Justice Center, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and River Hills School (serving patients at Children and Adolescent Services). Principal Heus and his team combine Pearson resources with local support and outreach to create a humanized, blended educational experience for families.

Dr. Alyssa Walters

Dr. Alyssa Walters is senior director of research, assessment, and accountability at Pearson Online & Blended Learning. She focuses on the design and implementation of efficacy and impact studies as well as accountability and assessment issues involving virtual schools.
