Our National Literacy Trust partnership
In 2023 we launched our Using ebooks to support reading for pleasure in 2023 – A survey of primary school teachers report that we worked on in association with the National Literacy Trust. Explore our infographic for a summary of the findings
We've also been a signatory of the National Literacy Trust's Vision for Literacy Business Pledge for the last couple of years, and this year is no different! We've resigned the Business Pledge for 2024, committing to helping ensure that every child has the literacy skills they need for life, irrespective of their background.
About the report
The research for the report was conducted between June and July 2023, and took the form of an online survey which consulted 516 primary teachers, including Classroom/Subject Teachers, members of Senior Leadership Teams (such as Headteachers, Deputy or Assistant Heads), Teaching Assistants, Literacy Coordinators, SENCOs and Librarians.

The findings at a glance
Hear from Dr Christina Clark, Director of Research and Evaluation at The National Literacy Trust
“The percentage of children and young people who tell us that they enjoy reading, and read for pleasure daily, has been on a downward trend in recent years, with reading enjoyment at its lowest level in 15 years. It is therefore imperative that we explore every way possible to support children’s reading, and we hope that these new insights into teachers’ experiences and perceptions of using eBooks contribute to the evidence base around digital support for reading for pleasure at school and at home.”
A case study: Ana’s* story
Explore the benefits of reading onscreen for dyslexic learners in our case study.
Ana is in Year 8 and has Dyslexia. She spoke to us around her lack of confidence and anxieties when it comes to reading (and exams) that stemmed from primary school. In particular, she said that she was embarrassed that she couldn’t keep up with her peers in regard to reading. This case study explores how reading digitally transformed her experience of reading.
* Ana is a pseudonym for a student we interviewed.
Pearson support for reading digitally
At Pearson, we’re committed to ensuring every child can develop a lifelong love of reading no matter their ability, background or identity. As part of this commitment, we’ve created Bug Club Reading Corner, our diverse online library of over 100 beautiful ebooks that children can choose according to their interests, encouraging them to read for pleasure. Reading Corner is part of our all-new Bug Club eBook Library.
With a subscription to our Bug Club eBook Library, teachers looking for support around reading for pleasure can also access professional development created in partnership with Professor Teresa Cremin and her team at The Open University. There are six online modules covering a range of teaching topics, including building communities of readers.
