New BTECs for first teach September 2025

BTEC's are evolving

We are pleased to announce that funding has been approved for the New BTEC Level 3 qualifications that we submitted in July 2023 as part of the Post-16 Level 3 vocational qualification reform.

The 12 new qualifications are across Science, ICT and Computing, Construction, Early Years, Health and Social Care and Engineering and will be available for first teach in September 2025. If there is a pause to the reforms, the current BTEC Nationals will be available until 2026 to support any changes to funding decisions.

    Sharon Davies, CEO of the national financial and enterprise education charity Young Enterprise, has spent years championing the power and positive impact of teaching young people financial skills.

    Following her recent appearance on Pearson’s The Right Angle podcast, she shares her thoughts on why integrating consistent financial education in UK schools is a goal worth striving for. Although financial education crosses over many areas of the curriculum, such as PSHE, business studies or science, many would argue that maths is its natural home. However, step back and remember the wise words of educationalist Dylan Wiliam that “everything works somewhere; nothing works everywhere – so we need to ask ourselves, under what conditions does x work?”

    I rarely meet a teacher these days who isn’t concerned about the growing number of children with speech, language and communication needs. 

    It isn’t likely to get better any time soon if we look at what is happening in the cohort of children who will soon be working their way through the school system. In a recent survey 82 per cent of health visitors reported seeing a year-on-year increase in children with speech, language and communication delays in their pre-school caseloads. And last year, Speech and Language UK estimated that at least 1.9 million primary- and secondary-aged children were struggling with talking and understanding words. That equates to one in five school-aged children – the highest number ever recorded.

  • Highlights of the week ending 17 June

    The Times Education Commission published its final report, calling for an education reset. The report entitled Bringing out the best: How to transform education and unleash the potential of every child, makes a number of recommendations for change across the education system, from early years through to university. Its recommendation for a British Baccalaureate at 18 and fewer exams at 16 is the latest contribution to the ongoing debate as to whether the current system of assessment is fit for purpose. However, the government is clear that it is not considering changes, having reformed exams under Michael Gove.

  • Highlights of the week ending 10 June

    This week has seen a wealth of statistics published by the Department for Education, covering all parts of the education journey, including: the number of pupils in English schools hitting 9 million; a rise in those pupils receiving free school meals; 4,400 more full time teachers are in post; advanced apprenticeship accounting for 44% of starts in the first half of the academic year; a widening of the gap between the employment rates of working-age graduates and postgraduates and non-graduates (first time since 2013).

  • Highlights of the week ending 27 May

    Ahead of the short recess next week (for which Policy Watch will take a short break), we have seen a raft of announcements from government covering the whole education landscape. The week began with education questions in the Commons with ministers and topics that included SEND students in FE, mental wellbeing of students, and the funding of low performing areas.
