Back-to-school 2021 spotlight: “What am I looking forward to? Teaching my favourite topics, conversations with students, and normality!”

As teachers, pupils, parents and carers settle into the new academic year, insights gathered from our recent conversations with parents and educators suggest there is a positive sense of excitement in the air for the wider school community.

We’re hearing so many morale-boosting stories that we’re keen to share them as far and wide as possible.

Spotlight on what teachers and families have told us...

In a spring term nationwide survey, 56% of teachers reported seeing pupil enjoyment of school improve following the most recent lockdown.  Amid the global uncertainty during the pandemic, our schools have remained constant cornerstones of their communities, with teachers often going above and beyond to champion not only their students’ education, but also their health and wellbeing. Remember, for instance, the stories of school leaders walking or driving for miles to drop off lunches to pupils who needed them most?

Shortly before the start of the new school year, some educators told us of their enthusiasm about the weeks ahead, and the impact they hoped to make.  Here's a selection of what they said they were looking forward to:

I can't wait to use all the teaching and learning resources in my classroom to build confidence.

getting to know my new school and team and starting to make a difference to the faculty and students.

continuing to support more emotionally vulnerable children in my role as [an] Emotional Literacy Support Assistant.

More than 8 in 10 respondents to a Pearson snapshot survey – which included both teachers and parents – believed that children are enjoying school more now they’re back in the physical classroom. The most frequently cited reasons for student enjoyment were given by teachers as socialising with friends (92%), followed by routine and structure of the school day (80%) and in-class support from teachers (73%).

Naturally, given recent events, words like “apprehensive” and “uncertain” were  used to describe thoughts around returning to teach in the classroom. At the same time, however, almost 7 in 10 educators described their feelings as “excited”, “relieved”, “happy”, “ready” and/or “great” at the prospect of a full return to classes. It’s clearly not only pupils and their families who feel rewarded by the consistency of education, and the stability it brings.
