Pearson response to WPI Strategy Report, 'Delivering Skills for Growth'

Pearson believes that every young person should have access to high quality technical and vocational qualifications with clear progression pathways.

There is a place for both T levels and BTECs/other Applied Generals in the modern skills landscape – not a stark choice between the two as the WPI Strategy report today suggests. We strongly urge the new Labour Government to continue its plans to implement a review of the Vocational Qualification reform programme.

We agree with the concerns of many in the FE sector that the reforms as they stand will see a dramatic fall in access and achievement for post-16 students. Analysis by the #protectstudentchoicecampaign indicates that at least 155,000 young people could be left without a suitable programme from 2026.  The evidence shows that the current direction of travel is almost certain to mean a decrease in access and achievement at Level 3, which would have a negative impact on the talent pipeline to higher level skills and jobs and to Higher Education. We look forward to working with educators, the sector and the new Labour Government to deliver the skills and knowledge need to support success for all learners.
