Dr Aniekan Essien, University of Bristol teaches Operations Management, a popular final-year undergraduate course with approximately 300 students enrolled annually. The unit, supported by Slack, Brandon-Jones and Burgess' textbook, combines lectures, fortnightly seminars with practical case studies, and assessments requiring reports on real-world operations. Introducing Revel aimed to enhance teaching by integrating practical examples with abstract concepts, and by fostering engagement through interactive learning features and relevant videos from real business and organisations operating today. Despite mixed student feedback on Revel's integration, there was an observable 2-3% improvement in student performance.
The integration of Revel into the curriculum involved providing students with a separate access link and aligning content with weekly topics, facilitating structured learning. Aniekan created a leaderboard to share with students, which took advantage of the platform's regular quizzes and incentivised student participation. Positive feedback from students focused on the convenience of the mobile app. Revel contributed significantly to teaching efficacy by pinpointing student struggles so Aniekan could adapt teaching accordingly, leading to improved conceptual grasp and question quality among students. While Revel's impact on assessment outcomes was limited due to the unit's practical project-based assessments, its use demonstrated potential benefits for enhancing student engagement and understanding in Operations Management.
