How I developed #mymediaskills
We spoke to two former BTEC Creative Media Production students about their experience with the qualification and the skills they developed throughout. Hear what they have to say -
Why did you choose to study BTEC Creative Media?
Amelia: I’ve always had a great interest in TV & Film so I wanted to explore it further.
Emily: I chose to study BTEC Creative Media because I have always enjoyed working with editing softwares and filming. I started a YouTube channel in 2013 and this helped me to explore my love for film. I eventually stopped making YouTube videos in 2018 but I still found my passion for filming through BTEC Creative Media.
What skills do you think your BTEC in Creative Media helped you to develop?
Amelia: I was given valuable skills, such as organisation, and learned how industry standard editing software such as Adobe Premier Pro CC is used. Both Unit 22: Single Camera Production and Unit 16: Editing Techniques were instrumental in developing my skills as an editor. During these units, I was able to explore a wide range of editing techniques, as well as evaluating when one would be used over the other.
During my second year of studying Creative Media Production, my teacher entered my Unit 22 'Netflix Original' into the Media Magazine Awards, and I finished fourth nationally for Best Editing. I’m also the curator for my end of year exhibition at college.
Emily: I developed editing, communication, writing and research skills. It also helped me to develop my use of different technology such as cameras, editing equipment, tripods and lighting.

How have these skills helped you in your current role?
Amelia: I use Adobe currently in my Art Foundation course, so some initial practice with it during my BTEC has allowed me to experiment more with mixed multimedia video installations.
Emily: I use these skills almost every day. I currently work on my own projects in photography and my experience through BTEC Creative Media means I have a good understanding of props, costume, lighting and settings. This lets me tell stories through my images and produce high quality imagery.
In my current role, I am in charge of everything. I take my own photos, edit them, publish them and I also find models, direct them, work out my money and everything else that is needed in my own business.
What did you enjoy most about studying your BTEC?
Amelia: I enjoyed the practical production of video content and using industry equipment.
Emily: I enjoyed being creative. I was able to make work that I was proud of and was happy to include in my CV and on my own website. One of my favourite pieces of work was a short horror film, which taught me that I enjoyed being a director and having control over the cinematography. This has helped me to focus on a career path in film creation.

Why would you recommend BTEC Creative Media?
Amelia: You learn a lot of valuable skills in this subject and it’s especially useful if you choose this type of work as a career path.
Emily: Yes, I would recommend BTEC Creative Media as it helped me make friends, explore new areas of film and TV and helped me to explore and discover different job opportunities within film.
