Harry Green describes his job as an analytical quality control scientist at a scientific research company. 

What is your role?

I currently line manage two quality control (QC) scientists performing routine analysis on highly purified water and raw materials.

I am also responsible for laboratory equipment validation, which ensures that each instrument is capable of doing what we need it to do. For example, I have performed temperature mapping studies on refrigerators to ensure the temperature throughout the chamber is uniform and within the operating range.

What do you like about your job?

It is a very challenging role that requires lots of hard work. However, it is very satisfying when a really important piece of work is completed.

What’s not so great about it?

Working in the QC lab can sometimes be tedious as there are a lot of samples that require the same analysis.

As the QC department adhere to good manufacturing process (GMP) regulations there are a lot of restrictions. We do not have as much freedom as the research side of the science industry.

How did you get to where you are?

I started working as a trainee QC analyst after I finished my GCSEs in 2006. I went on to complete an NVQ Level 3 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (LATA). At this point I was reviewing analytical data and preparing equipment.

I then completed a BTEC in Applied Science on day release. I was offered the role of senior scientist and began performing equipment validation studies such as temperature mapping of thermal equipment.

I completed a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Applied Chemistry in 2012. I was tasked with identifying and obtaining equipment required for analytical testing and raw materials analysis.

What do you want to do next?

I have progressed so much from having no experience whatsoever in the biopharmaceutical industry. I want to keep learning and obtaining qualifications and experience.

I have just begun a part time degree for a BSc in Applied Chemistry. This will hopefully lead to me getting a degree and allow me to progress further with my career.
