Working in logistics

Logistics is about getting the right supplies to where they need to be on time.

All organisations need supplies to keep them in business. These can be parts, products, people or animals. And businesses need to get their products to their customers. There are logistics careers in transportation, storage/warehousing and supply chain. Nearly ten per cent of all UK workers work in logistics. Jobs are available at all levels, including LGV driver, import/export clerk, distribution operative, demand and supply planner and supply chain director.

More IT skills will be needed in the future to manage the complex processes within supply chains.

Good communications with national and overseas customers is vital. More and more goods come from abroad. So more jobs in logistics will involve communicating with other countries. Future opportunities include working with the armed services, manufacturing, freight forwarding and working for charities.
