Community Development in Canada is intended for related courses at community college and university, as well as in adult education and professional development environments.
Students study community development for a variety of reasons. Some come to the course with a wealth of life experience and a great deal of expertise in community development work. Others are completely new to the area and come with an interest in how community organization and capacities impact the well-being of citizens. Our vision for this text, therefore, was to include theoretical and historical perspectives, as well as a brief look at the contemporary approaches used and skills needed by community workers. We have highlighted many major contributions by Canadians to the development and practice of community development. We are very pleased to have prepared this third edition of the text, which remains consistent with the purpose and themes outlined in the first edition but has been updated throughout to reflect current and emerging aspects of community development practice in Canada.
New and updated features of this title
- As the world shifts to a greater reliance on digital media, it is appropriate that this text evolves as well. This third edition is the first fully digital version of Community Development in Canada. Instructors and students will find that, although the medium has changed, the content is fully consistent with prior editions.
- Each chapter of the third edition was reviewed and updated with recent data, concepts, practices, and examples. Updates to Chapter 1 include recent data on community issues and the addition of a section on cultural communities.
- Chapter 5 has been updated to include a new section on leadership from Indigenous and Western perspectives, as well as a description of colonialism and its impact.
- Chapter 8 was completely rewritten with new case examples from each territory and province, illustrating a variety of scope, location, populations, and issues.
- The chapter on Indigenous community development, Chapter 9, was also completely rewritten with a focus on Indigenous rights and governance and a profile of the Friend-ship Centre Movement.
