This workshop offers an accessible and engaging professional learning experience, designed and facilitated by experts. Participants will learn about the use of guided reading as a key instructional strategy for differentiating reading instruction within the classroom.
Learning outcomes
Reading and Comprehension Instruction: Introduction to the Essential Elements:
- Identify the key elements of a quality reading program and effective reading instruction.
- Understand and discuss each of the four critical elements of comprehension: readers, texts, teachers and processes.
- To explicitly model how the Systems of Strategic Action provide a critical framework for discussing comprehension processing systems and goal setting with students.
- Plan a Read Aloud, Think Aloud which demonstrates how the four comprehension elements of readers, texts, teachers and processes are interconnected and developed in this key strategy.
- Understand how the Fountas and Pinnell text level gradient and the continuum are used to plan for effective reading instruction.
Guided Reading; learning how to read with comprehension and fluency:
- To provide a clear instructional model for implementing Guided Reading
- Consider the positive and challenging elements of implementing Guided Reading in the classroom.
- To learn how to use Guided Reading as an instructional approach to help readers develop systems of strategic actions for processing and thinking about texts.
- To develop teacher capacity to select and match Guided Reading texts and explicit teaching to the instructional needs of children in small differentiated groups.
Using mentor texts to inspire readers and develop deeper thinking:
- Identifying the key characteristics of fiction text to teach and support our readers.
- Identifying the key characteristics of nonfiction text to teach and support our readers.
- Understanding the characteristics of potential mentor texts.
- Practical ideas for using mentor texts to develop an appreciation of literature and author’s craft.
Prerequisites
All participants should prepare for this workshop by familiarising themselves with the components in the system(s) they will be using, as the workshop does not include a product unpack.
Target Audience
Educators from schools where the Fountas & Pinnell Guided Reading has recently been adopted, or who have joined a school where it is already in use.
Educators from schools where the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System is implemented, or who have joined a school where it is already in use. It is not a pre-requisite to be using Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading.
