What it is
Sails Literacy is a comprehensive reading program for Primary students that offers:
- Over 850 fiction and non-fiction readers with captivating visuals and intriguing topics in a wide variety of genres
- guided readers, shared readers (big books), independent readers and take-home readers
- balanced, well-rounded language experiences and a unique focus on visual literacy
- opportunities to develop critical thinking skills
- handy teaching notes on the inside cover.

Sails Literacy Series Stages
First Wave
Introduce young readers to high-frequency words and phrases as they move from simple captions to more complex sentences.
First Wave Emergent features:
- 96 finely levelled titles ideal for class use and take-home reading programs
- guide notes on visual literacy, critical thinking, phonological patterns, and language features
- sample questions with clear connections to the text to develop spelling skills
- visual story frames to encourage discussion and critical thinking
- a teacher’s resource CD with guide notes for all First Wave titles
- checklists to help assess and evaluate students’ literacy progress in oral, written, and visual language as well as high frequency words and phonological patterns
- independent reinforcing activities for focus words.

Sails Guided Reading
Guided readers
- The student books in Sails Guided Reading are a mix of fiction and non-fiction readers that have been carefully structured and levelled from Emergent to Advanced Fluency.
- The series provides progressive vocabulary and supports student language, reading and writing development.
- Decoding and comprehension skills are developed and understanding of purpose, structure and text types is promoted.
- Each title is 16–24 pages in length and features timesaving guided reading notes on visual literacy, critical thinking, phonological patterns and language features.
Teacher resources
Each guided reading level includes:
- a mix of teacher’s resource CDs and books, outlining targets specific to the literacy stage of development
- a complete evaluation and assessment package with observation sheets, records of reading behaviour, checks on oral, written and visual language and phonological patterns
- blackline masters for assessment of reading skills, genres, phonological patterns and visual language.

MainSails
MainSails gives your students the inside knowledge on how language works, how to analyse it and how to apply it to a variety of situations.
MainSails offers fiction and non-fiction titles suitable for students aged 9–12+. Each title features:
- a stimulating magazine-style format
- unique Think Tank elements encouraging students to ask questions, make predictions and inferences, summarise key points, focus on language, and analyse literacy devices
- specific modelling of text types, including fantasy, mystery, reports, explanation and narratives.
- a 'Think About the Text' section that gets students making connections to their own personal experience, to similar or different texts, and to issues within the world
A teacher resource book and CD is available to support MainSails at each year level, containing guide notes and blackline masters.

Sails Shared Reading
Shared readers are available in big book and small book versions for emergent, early, and fluent levels. They feature rich stories with rhythm, rhyme, magic, humour, and repetition.
- Big books are designed for large-group and whole-class teaching situations.
- Small books provide children the opportunity to enjoy storylines many times over at their own leisure.
All shared reading books are featured on a shared reading audio CD.

Sailing Solo
Sailing Solo transitions students from guided to independent reading by:
- consolidating comprehension and analytical thinking skills
- offering titles suitable for both take-home reading and classroom use
- ensuring topics are contemporary and stimulating
- using fun full colour cartoons and images to entice readers.

Sails Take-Home Library
The Sails Take-Home Library features stimulating texts to support take-home reading programs at the Early level in Years 1 and 2.
Each book includes notes to support parents and careers in helping them strengthening the child's reading skills.

Sails Literacy Charting Progress Kit
Sails Literacy Charting Progress Kits help you assess students using engaging texts unique to these packages.
- The Emergent and Early kit features 18 benchmark books designed to gather data about a student’s reading ability across reading levels 1 to 15.
- The Fluency kit features 21 benchmark cards used to analyse higher comprehension strategies across reading levels 14 to 28.
The included teachers resource book provides:
- methods for supporting information gathering
- suggestions to improve students’ comprehension strategy skills
- records and assessment sheets.
