Discovering what works, how, and why
Learning about learning
To help people reach their learning goals, we need to understand learning.
First of all, that means understanding the evolving reasons why people learn. Is it to pass a test, to get a job, or simply for the satisfaction of improving yourself?
Once we know what outcomes matter to learners, we can develop products and solutions that help them get there.

Learning design
We believe that powerful learning experiences:
- Are vibrant and enriching
- Are for everyone
- Support lifelong learning
- Are designed for real-life impact
This is the experience we strive to create for our learners. We do this by designing learning experiences in line with our Learning Design Principles.
These principles describe the optimal conditions for learning, using the best insights from the cognitive and learning sciences.
Each of our Learning Design Principles goes into detail about key principles of learning design, describing:
- why they matter in learning
- the essential big ideas from the research
- how they can be applied in practice

Great learning is a welcoming experience
Learning is engaging, positive, and maybe even a little fun (even when it’s hard)
Learners believe they can succeed and are motivated to achieve their goals
Learning is inclusive & social, and is best done with and alongside others
Great learning is built for how minds learn
Learning happens best when minds are supported and challenged
Learners build on existing knowledge, learn through guided practice and build well-organized mental models
They actively make meaning and flexible connections in increasingly authentic settings
Learners build meaningful, connected, and at-the-ready ‘usable’ knowledge.

Great learning supports good learning behavior
Good learners not only gain content knowledge, but also take charge of their own learning and gain insights into their own learning process
They are aware of what they know, what they don't, and what they need to do to get there
We support learners to make good decisions with their time to get the most out of their learning experience
Great learning has purposeful outcomes-focused design
Instructional alignment ensures a laser-focus on the right stuff
Learning objectives and purposeful instruction move the learner forward on the outcomes that matter
Learning is personalized and will help them achieve a meaningful real-world relevant goal
Great learning can happen anywhere
And we have guidance on how to make that happen in different contexts
