Nickel has an atomic number of 28, which means it has 28 electrons. Its electron configuration would be argon4s23d8. Now, if we wanna do it for the nickel 3+ion, we need to remove 3 electrons. Our noble gas portion we don't look at it because that's kind of locked away in a vault within the brackets. Here because the number is 4, this is n equals 4. Because the number here is 3, this is n equals 3. Remember, we remove our first electrons from the highest shell number. So we're gonna remove our first electrons from the 4 s orbital. We need to lose 3 electrons total, so both of these electrons here are gonna be gone. So 4s is completely gone now. So we're gonna have argon, we need to lose one more electron, it's gonna have to come out of the 3 d. Removing 1 electron leaves us with 3d7. So now if we look we have argon, remember our d sublevel has 5 orbitals within it. Following Hund's rule we half fill them, we have to fill in 7 electrons, so up, up, up, up, up, that's 5, come back around, 6, 7. Here the nickel 3 ion has 3 unpaired electrons. As long as you have at least 1 unpaired electron you are paramagnetic.
