Hello, everyone. Today, we are being given the falling problem, identify the type of reaction occurring given that it is carried out in standard conditions, sulfur dioxide gas reacts with carbon monoxide. So first we're gonna draw this reaction, we have our sulfur dioxide and the gas form reacting with carbon monoxide, which is also a gas. This is going to form a sulfur gas ion plus C +02 or carbon dioxide gas. And so in this situation, we see we have to calculate for oxidation. Now, so we have our two substances that could possibly be oxidized or reduced. That's going to be our sulfur and our carbon. So the oxidation state of our sulfur on the left here is going to be plus four. And so why is that the oxidation for oxygen is always going to be negative two. And so we take the oxidation number and we multiply it by how many of that substance we have. So we have negative two, we're going to multiply that by the two oxygen's giving us negative four. And so to get to zero are are sulfur has to be positive for. And so if we look on the right, any substance or ion that is or any atom that is by itself or mono atomic species is going to have an oxidation number of zero. And so if you look on the left here, carbon is going to have an oxidation state of positive too. Why is that, as we said before, oxygen usually always has an oxidation state of negative two, we only have one of them. So to get to zero carbon has to be positive to, to balance that out. If you look on the right oxygen once again has negative two. However, there are two of them this time. So we have negative two times two, giving us negative four and to get to zero carbon has to be positive for. And so this is going to be representative of a redox reaction because there was a change in the oxidation states for both species here.
